Where O' Where were you when I moved from my Palm to Jornada 548 - 4 or 5 years ago. If I had this tutoral I would not have gone back to palm. Thanks. Before I went back to Palm I had purchased a Jornada 567. When the "dust" issue became so bad that I could not read text on top of not being able to manage the file system I gave up. I haven't heard of the dust issue on Pocket PC's for a long time so I am assuming that It's no longer a problem. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into this tutoral. Bob

You're very welcome. Be sure to stick around and check out the forums, reviews and other tutorials! If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. Welcome to Aximsite! :D
I've had my Axim X5 for about a week now. I have wiped it out several times now, just trying to get it configured with the right set of apps and nothing else. I've been making good progress and have pretty much gotten what I want to use, but I have a few questions:
1. How do you make the decision where to install your programs? I originally tried installing everything to CF, but some programs hang when you try to run them, or I later read that XYZ program should be installed to the Main memory location. I am looking to optimize my Axim so that I can have the apps I want and still have a sufficient amount of memory available to run them.
2. What is a typical or optimal amount of memory to have free, with no apps running?
3. Any tricks to optimizing memory? I remember in the old days of DOS and Windows 3.x, there were all sorts of programs out there to play tricks with RAM... QEMM, Stacker, etc.
Any help would be provided, or if this should be posted elsewhere, please advise.
Thanks1

1. The general rule of thumb is to install as many programs onto your memory cards since you want to leave as much memory free as possible for running programs. That said, however, there are certain applications which do better when installed in Main Memory. These include those that specify Main Memory as installation location and Today Plugins. I also install critical programs into Main memory so that I can always access them even when my memory card has been removed.
Note that some people install programs into Built-In Storage as well. The advantage to this is that it will not be erased following a hard reset. However, because there may be registry entries located in Main Memory, the application may not work following a hard reset anyway. Also, Built-In Storage has fewer write cycles.
2. I'm not really sure what this answer is. I generally try to keep at least 16-18 MB or so free to run programs but what you need will depend on how resource intensive what you're trying to run is.
3. Because memory on your Axim is different from the RAM on your PC, I don't think you can think of it quite in the same way. Since memory on your Axim is used as RAM and also as storage, the most obvious way to optimize memory is to avoid installing or saving anything into main memory. Other things to do include properly closing progams that are not being used (either using the Switcher utility or a 3rd party utility such as Icbar or Wisbar) and avoiding using applications which have memory leaks.
I've done my best to answer your questions. Perhaps someone else has somethng else to add! :)
Thank you Gigi... that's what I've tried to do, so sounds like I am on the right track. I didn't know about the fewer cycles on the storage memory though, and I'm wondering if I ought to wipe and reload once more and not put anything there.
In Built-In Storage, I have Adobe Acrobat Reader, Pocket Mechanic, AIM, Total Commander, Pocket Nester, and Macromedia Flash.
In Main Memory, I have updated Microsoft Reader, RegKing 2003, updated MSN Messenger, NetFront, Pocket e-Sword, WinamPAQ and WISBar Advanced. The NES, Music and Bible files are stored on a 256MB Kingston SD chip, and I have a 256MB CF module which is currently empty
The above configuration leaves me 18MB free in Program and 14 mb free in storage.
This seems to be stable and complete for my needs.

Waiting for my X30 High.
Not so many people buying Dell pda (in Australia) therefore it is difficult for me to get support/buy third party accessories for my axim :(
I followed the directions in your tutorial for uninstalling programs. The program "seems" to be gone, but there is still an icon for it in "PROGRAMS". Can you tell me how to get rid ot the icon? This is on an AXIM X3. Do I need to do anything differently than your directions for an X5?

I thank you. Robert Ackerfield
Open up your File Explorer program. Go to My Device --> Windows--> Start Menu --> Programs. Then tap and hold the name of the program and select Delete.

I seem to be unable to get this much free memory on my X30 and I don't have a lot installed. Since I got it, I have installed the following programs, all to main memory:
Agenda Fusion
Axim Self Diagnostic
NetFront3
Plan Maker
PocketRSS
powerOne Financial
TextMaker
ThunderHawk
Championship Spades Pro
Patiences
I only have 4 meg storage and 6 meg program space free. As this is my first PPC, I have no idea what is in storage that is using up 42 meg of memory. Any help here would be appreciated.

That seems to be very little memory. I would uninstall and reinstall some of those onto your memory card if you can. Are you finding that your system is sluggish?
Some other ways to free up some memory include:
1. soft reset
2. clear notifications if you're running WM2003
3. delete temp files (including those from PIE)
4. clean up registry and bad shortcuts
You can find more details about these in my tutorial about "Taking care of your Axim" (link in my signature) under "Housekeeping."
Coming from Palm, it never occured to me to install any programs to the card. I guess I need to get another card to hold them.
But the biggie was the temporary internet files! I thought I had cleaned those out but I guess not. Following your tutorial, I deleted the files and I now have 11.82 mb storage & 10.57 mb program memory free! Guess I need to check out one of the programs you mentioned.
The link to:
what can I do with my exim?
and today help are working but no content inside.
Can you give me another site or where do I need to go to view the above help?
Thanks.
Hmm...I just tried the links and they both worked fine. Try again and if they still don't work, you can just go to the Resources tab (up top to your right) and pick Tutorials from the drop down menu. if you still can't get it, you might want to post about it in the Site Troubles forum.
