It sounds very much as if you have an alarm set for midnight.
Go Start/settings/systems/clocks& alarms and check if one is set
to the time it boots up.
Many Pocket PCs turn on at midnight to perform system tasks. You cannot disable this. The best thing to do is check the power options for battery power and make sure you have the set to turn of the pocket pc automatically after a short period of time.

Can you help me? My problem is that if my Axim comes on, say with a PI reminder, it won't turn off, although I have battery power set to turn off after a few minutes. It just dims the screen. PI say it is an Axim not a PI problem. As a result if it turns on during the night it is flat, or almost, by morning.
Julie is right about self maintenace routines, there is one in the registry
Time based\Windows\calupd.exe that executes every nite at 12:00:00AM
but I have checked it and it does not turn the 51v on when it executes
at least not visually.
The only thing I can suggest is the "alarms" or possibly PI/other
software,unistall suspected culprits and test.
The midnight update process doesn't, by itself, turn the unit on, but if you shut it off with the power button with processes running, when the update fires it up, those processes can hold it up. GPS, Media Player, Alarms, Today screen plug-ins have all been accomplices in this dynamic duo.
I can now clarify the problem a bit. It is not due to anything turning the Axim on, it is just when it is on it will only dim the screen , not turn itself off. After a comment above, I tried it with all programs turned off and it is the same. I also considered that it might be a program beavering away in the background like a battery monitor, but then it wouldn't have dimmed the screen. So basically the Brightness setting to Dim after a certain time works, but the Power setting to Turn Off does not work.
