Stay or Go?

I've been a long time palm owner. My current palm is a T3 and I love how fast and responsive it is. I just bought an x50v because I wanted onboard wifi. I'm finding however that the Axim seems really slow even with power saving CPU off. I really dislike the fancy-smanchy graphic backgrounds and embellishments and feel these additions only slow the machine down.

Is there some way of slimming down the OS so that the whole thing runs better. WM2003 A05 is currently installed and I'm not really interested in applying WM5 based on what I've read about it.

Also, I hear a buzzing in the audio channel. Perhaps there is a fix for this.

I'm considering selling the Axim and sticking with Palm unless I can get this thing running nicely.

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated ^_^

If speed of the interface is your only consideration then you probably shouldn't have gone with a VGA pocket-PC. They're very attractive but the horsepower required to support a VGA screen comes with tradeoffs.

I used to have a Palm Pilot many years ago and moved to WinCE/Pocket PC as soon as they came out. I've always stuck with the QVGA screens myself and I don't perceive a performance problem with them - certainly nothing that gets in my way.

PPC applications are far richer than their Palm counterparts. Again, that does come with a performance price. If the processors are equivalent a PPC is simply going to require more CPU to implement a more advanced interface. To most of us this is worth the tradeoff.

You did come to a PPC board to ask this question, after all! Welcome to Aximsite, BTW...

A really good link may be Tanker Bobs page

Tanker Bob's Handheld Computing Page

TankerBob was a major Palm user, who picked up an axim and documented twists, steps, and impressions moving between the two platforms.

The VGA display is very very nice but at the end of the day I am a performance enthusiast so you are likely right about getting one with qvga. Perhaps I will play with some applications and see if it's something I can live with and then make the decision to downgrade to qvga. Any model suggestions?

Thanks for that link. Very interesting reading.

QVGA displays can be very crisp and attractive looking. Yes, VGA has a smoother appearance but if the former is, IMHO, a good balance of performance and appearance. The DPI resolution of a QVGA is perfectly fine in a 3-4 inch display. Most of the software for PPC's is written with QVGA in mind also.
