lots of newbie questions X51v

Hi everybody,

the forum is entitled "don´t be afraid to ask" so I will...

I´ve bought a used Axim X51v and I´m happy with it, the screen and it´s resolution are impressing.

1. The device came without a CD. Do I need a special software to link it to my PC?
2. what batteries do you recommend? The 2200mAh is bigger than the original one, and I don´t like that.
3. which memory cards do you recommend? I´ll use it as a personal information device on the wards, so i´ll load a bunch of ebooks on it. I think 2GB will make it. Do you recommend SD-cards or a different format?
4. If I use the hard reset, will there be every data erased on the device? I mean all the programs and stuff? There´s Adobe reader 2.0 on it and some more utilities that might become useful so I don´t want to erase them, but all the other stuff from the former owner could be thrown out. What to do?
5. the systems probably relatively old. is there a way to renew it? i´m afaraid that it won´t be compatible with some more modern standards, especially in wlan-technology.

Thanks for your answers.

Ok, med.

Lets see what we can do.

1) The software you'll need to get your PC to talk to your axim is called Activesync, and you'll need version 4 or higher.. It's a free download from Microsoft Download Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 Software – Windows Mobile Updates

2) as regards to batteries I love my extended one... but it does make it larger. There's an 1800 that sort of splits the difference in size between the 2200 and the 1100...

3) you can either go for SD or CF as you have slots for both. and you can use both at the same time. What you can't use is the new SDHC format cards (without some hacking around and even then the results can be unpredictable) a 2GB card. Just don't buy it from Ebay as there are a lot of fake cards out there :(

4) A hard reset will wipe the programs. Adobe can be re-installed and is free in any case.

5) your wLan should still be good to go...

lots of good sales on 2gb cards if you look around buy.com, amazon.com ect. All come with warranty. If you use it for videos you'll probably in the end buy more than one.:approve:

My advice- buy as big of a card(s) as you can afford- memory is really cheap now. Newegg is one of my favorite places to get memory cards. Buy.com and Amazon are great as well. Might want to check this thread Storage Card Compatibility List for compatible cards.

I have a 2GB SD and a 8GB CF both of which are over half full with data- mostly pdf files for work. I also have some videos which take up quite a bit of space.

I'm using the 1100 mah batteries (I have 3) in mine because I didn't like the larger 2200 either and also so my case will fit it.

Speaking of cases, I would suggest getting one to protect your PDA in the event it gets dropped and to just keep it in great shape throughout the daily knocks of life. I have bought and tried several cases and my favorite by a long shot is the InnoPocket Magnum Case for Dell Axim X50(v) and X51(v) with Swivel Belt Clipabout a quarter of the way down the page. It is well worth the price and the flip up front cover is so much better than the flip to the side style.

A lot of the utilities that are on your device may be free anyway- check if they are and you can just download and install them fresh if you decide to do a hard reset. Here is an awesome resource for lots of free apps for your PDA. Best Pocket PC Freeware.

I love my x51v and hope it works out great for you as well.

Oh yeah, to Aximsite!!

thx

thx a lot,

you really helped me.
1. I certainly won´t buy memory cards on ebay. In my hometown there´s a so called "eletronic mile": one computer shop next to the other. Their prices are at least as low as on ebay...

2. is it advisable to do a hard reset? At the moment I am a little bit confused about the settings the former owner did. The system hopefully won´t be erased from the decive when doing a hard reset?

3. has there recently been an update of windows mobile? do I have to do such an update?

You'll need WMDC rather than ActiveSync if you are running Vista. You can get WMDC free from Microsoft, too.

You'll also need Outlook, not Outlook Express, not Windows Calendar. Outlook is not free, but you might already have it.

I just replaced my X50V with a "new in box" X51V off eBay myself. Don't worry about it being out of date. It is still a fine PPC. WM6 is really more like WM5SE anyway. ;)

Oh, and if you want to migrate the data on a CF or an SD card to another one, just use a USB card reader, copy all the data to your PC, then back to the new card. I backup my cards weekly to my PC so that I can recover them in case they go bad or I outgrow them and need a bigger one. I'm about to do that with the CF and go 4GB from my existing 2GB card.

I recommend installing a good backup program like Sprite Backup or Sunnysoft before you try a hard reset. A hard reset will take your Ax back to "Like new" operating system, but will also wipe the programs you want to keep. The backup program will let you put your beloved programs back.:rolling:

And a screen protector is a good idea, too, in addition to a good case.
