Exclamation Upgrading ROM from 2002 to 2003

I bought an upgrade CD for my Axim x5, but, am a little scared to use it.

According to the directions, installing Active Sync 3.7 I think it is seems okay, but, it's the data backup part that scares me. I don't want to lose my data that I have worked really hard putting on there.

I've also bought some items that require a code number to be put in. For a couple of items, I no longer have the unlock code anymore, as it was lost in an email crash.

I guess I am afraid of disassociating the partnership and getting it back right after the upgrade.

It also seems that the data backup and restore operations are kinda left up to me to perform correctly, and are not done automatically. I have not gone vary far into the process because I don't want to kill anything.

It seems to be a little like a firmware update, and I am also worried that something might go wrong and turn my PPC into a small brick!

Lastly, can I install the latest version of ActiveSync or do I have to use the CD and install the version of ActiveSync that is included?

Thanks to some seasoned users in advance for helping a PPC newbie out. I am very experienced with computers and PC repair and even some Macintosh but, am new to the Pocket PC.

in activesync 3.x it had built in backup and restore... just follow the directions from the backup function of that part of activesync. its very easy and intuitive.

with regard to your licensed programs. all developers will send you your code(s) if you request them. just shoot them an email and theyll be glad to resupply you with your license key.

for the ultimate backup and protection, id use sprite backup to make a backup of all items on your device. save that file to your computer before a major rom update such as this. in addition to the activesync backup, should somthing get corrupted along the way.

when all is backed up, remove any storage cards, make sure the device is fully charged and synced/backed up... then start the upgrade process. read everything, and make sure you follow the directions. its very easy and usually doesnt take longer than 5-10 minutes. dont be too afraid of all the warnings. just take care whenever youre flashing any kind of rom or bios and things will be just fine

The upgrade is definitely worth it as I used to have an x5 and went to 2003. I don't know that I would want to put any old files on the new rom though. You could just keep a list of main apps and redownload them with your seriel numbers for those important apps. Some may not work correctly anyway even with backup.

I second the comment above though its an easy upgrade to do. Not Vista which come to think of it was simple too. Back to xp oh shut up. bye.:hide:

Im not sure if you can restore data from a previous version of windows mobile... 2002 backup restoring to 2003.

It may take some extra time, but everything will probably run smoother if you reinstall all you applications after upgrading, rather then restoring from a backup.

the point is to have a backup, have an up to date sync of contacts and calander events, and anything else you may need to sync before you flash a new rom...

programs will have to be reinstalled and relicensed, settings will have to be configured all over again... etc etc.

the benefit is a snappier cleaner device with a new(er) rom.

its best to back things up with sprite backup as they provide a utility to browse and take from backups on your host computer, should you need to do that. sprite also has a rom upgrade backup process, if you really wanted to go that route...
