I have an Axim x50v with WM6. I purchased it on ebay so there is no CD with it; other than that it is great! I D/L'd ActiveSync(the latest) from the MS site and I only could get it to sync once(yes, I've tried ALL the troubleshooting techniques!). I'm not concerned because I don't use Outlook but I would like to know how to install programs (I've been to the mobile devices download sites) without using ActiveSync. I have an SD card and a converter drive reader/writer so I am assuming I could D/L that way; which I have tried. I see that it works with zipped files and CABs but how do I install a program with the .exe extension?
Also, I have searching the forums and see that WM6 is not "official." Should I downgrade to WM5 or 2003? I've not had any trouble with WM6 other than the sync issue and that seems to be a fairly common problem.
If there is another thread I can be directed to, that would be great.
Most things with an exe extension would require that you install it via your pc. However, once you have gone through the install, check the folder you installed it to on your pc and look for the cab files. Then you should be able to copy the cab files to you sd card with a card reader and install them that way.
To clarify the above if it wasn't clear enough:
* Install activesync/-tink
* Install the software
* Check C:\Program Files\Microsoft Activesync\
The cab file should be there.
Note - Some .exe's are supposed to run on the device (You'll get an error message if that's the case).
I've got an SD card designated for installation .cab files if I have to hard reset or, for that matter, reflash on the road.
This solution even gives me total desktop operating system freedom. :)
XP and gentoo(at the moment) at home, but the point I was trying to make is that with all the cab files extracted I don't need activesync/WMDC if I want to reinstall(hence no need to be in flavors of windows). I don't even need a desktop computer. I've freed my device, so to speak. I don't even know where my cradle is.
Haven't tried any backup programs, and I like it this way. :)

I'll probably need sync software pretty soon. My schedule of life is filling up rapidly. :)
I've mainly used it to navigate, play games, access networks and play media, and I guess my .cabmania approach is downright lousy when it comes to business use (although I still think backing up the .cab files is a good idea).
