Aximsitex50icon Some basic questions

I have an Axim x50v with WM6. I purchased it on ebay so there is no CD with it; other than that it is great! I D/L'd ActiveSync(the latest) from the MS site and I only could get it to sync once(yes, I've tried ALL the troubleshooting techniques!). I'm not concerned because I don't use Outlook but I would like to know how to install programs (I've been to the mobile devices download sites) without using ActiveSync. I have an SD card and a converter drive reader/writer so I am assuming I could D/L that way; which I have tried. I see that it works with zipped files and CABs but how do I install a program with the .exe extension?

Also, I have searching the forums and see that WM6 is not "official." Should I downgrade to WM5 or 2003? I've not had any trouble with WM6 other than the sync issue and that seems to be a fairly common problem.

If there is another thread I can be directed to, that would be great.

Thanks in advance

if you're enjoying wm6 i'd probably stay with it.

To install software you can either run the setup program (.exe) on your pc and connect with activesync... or

Copy a .cab file to the SD card on the axim and run it on your axim.

Aximsitex50icon Downloading without ActiveSync

Thanks for the info. I will keep WM6 since I'm not having any problems with it.

Now, to my other question. How can I install programs without using ActiveSync? Do all programs have a CAB file? Can I run the setup program (.exe) on my PC, copy it all to the SD card and transfer to the Axim?

Also, I noticed on the USB connector that connects from the PDA to the USB port that some of the "teeth" are missing so I am assuming that this may cause the computer & PDA to not sync, correct? The cradle doesn't really work at all.

Thanks for the info and help! :approve:

You can get a replacement sync cradle or cable at many places. I suggest you do so if you want to install programs from your computer, which is the simplest way.

Most programs have cab files.

Even without a snyc cable or cradle you can use activesync to install programs. For a lot of programs when you run a setup file through Activesync a .cab file is generated and can be found in the folder C: > Program files > Microsoft Activesync > "Name of Program" from there you can copy the .cab file to a storage card and run it using file explorer on your Ax. Be sure you get the ARM version .cab file.

When you plug in your cradle and try to sync does it begin to sync and then say unable to sync? If so it probably isn't the pin you are talking about.

If your not getting any response at all. IE that bong sound when you plug the cradle in or de de de sound when it begins to sync then it probably is one of the pins in the usb connection is broken.

Check online to see what each pin does. IE pin one is used for such and such. pin two is used such and such. You'd troubleshoot to the broken pin and why there is no sync.

your axim is meant for wm5 but if wm6 i agree not to change it. Also most programs require active sync and without it your missing a lot. I can't remeber any program I've installed without it.

Also this is not much help at this point but ebay has spanish cd's for 3.00 you could try installing on computer just to see what your missing by not haveing the cd and then deleting it.

sorry about the double post.:hide:
