Icon3 New Axim User, used a Palm Years Ago...Few Questions

So I just bought a used Dell Axim X50 (520 mhz, 128 mb unit). It has not arrived yet, but I have a few questions that some of you may be able to help me with.

The item did not come with a disk, however I've been assured the only thing on the original disk (packaged with the unit) is active sync? Is this true and if it is - is there a specific version I need or will the most recently offered one on Microsoft work?

As I am new I'm also a bit overwhelmed by all of my options.

1. The item comes with Windows '03...should I stick with this and update it later as I become more comfortable or is it worth updating now?

2. I want to use the item mainly for the following...is there anything I specifically need.

- Play music and videos (I will mainly use my Ipod Video for this, but it would be nice to put a few on the unit)
- Download contacts for easy access
- Download Outlook calendars
- Check emails while on the go during the day
- Browse the internet
- Work on word/excell documents on the go

I eventually want to get a smart phone, but there really isn't one that jumps out at me besides the Blackberry curve and the price is just overwhelming. As I am a new windows mobile user - I wanted to get something to get me aquanted with the system. I was lucky and found this unit for $100 and it came with extras.

Thanks in advance and hopefully this post will help others as well!

If you're using Windows XP on your computer then Activesync 4.5 is what you need to sync your Outlook Calendar, Contacts and Emails. If you're using Windows Vista you need to download the Windows Mobile Device Center.

For Music and Videos you can use Windows Media Player already on your device but a lot of people prefer TCPMP because it can play more music and video formats. Aximsite Member Unit ZERO has an excellent thread to get you up to date with TCPMP.

Pocket Internet Explorer and Pocket Excel are built into your device so you're all set there.

Welcome to Aximsite.

For Word/Excell you can use either Mobile Office or Docs To Go.

Music and video is a matter of preference. I prefer CorePlayer over TCPMP.

The same is true for net browsers. I use Opera Mobile and am quite happy with it.

Contacts, Email and Calendar I use the preinstalled Outlook Mobile with good results.

I know the number of options can be a bit daunting, but don't be afraid to install trials and test out several applications for each need. They are easy to remove ionce you decide which you wish to keep.

Enjoy the new device, and good luck.

Thanks to everyone for the advice...received the item today and I'm already playing.

A few things I noticed on it that worry me...these could be defects.

1 - the charger (outlet) doesn't securely hold. If you move the pda the charger comes loose on one side. It's as if it doesn't connect...is this a common issue?

2 - the touch screen doesn't react all the time. At first I had to soft reset the item a few times before I could get through the alignment etc...is this a common problem

thanks again

Hopefully I can get this going. I only paid $100 for it and it came with a belkin touch keyboard (the small one), lots of extra memory, and a few carrying cases...so I feel I got a great deal - but of course it needs to work.
