Window Mobile 2003SE and Upgrading ROM Question

Hello:

I recently acquired an X50 to use with a Socket Scan CF card (for scanning upc codes (ISBN) for bookscouting) I'm a book reseller and the X50 is just what I needed. However, I noticed that whenever the Axim goes to "sleep" after not being used for more than 5 minutes, the Socket Scan card loses its connection and will not operate. So I have to reseat the card or do a soft reset to get things going again.

My rom version is A01 (10130400). I understand that Dell took care of the CF compatability issue with the release of rom verion A02 and beyond. I want to unpgrade to the A02 or the latest rom if advisable (A05 - correct?) However, since I bought this unit used, it did not come with the OS or any other discs.

If I upgrade the rom, will I wipe out the OS and be unable to use the device?

Is there a way to back-up the OS first?

Is there any place I can download the OS online if it gets wiped out now or in the future?

Thanks so much for your help

Ed

you can update to the latest version of wm2003se by downloading the update from the dell website.

This will completely wipe your device.. so remember to follow the instuctions carefully.

Dell did release a wm5 upgrade, however this was never a free download from dell (you had to buy it)

The internet being the thing it is, means you can probably find it. However there are issues with running wm5 on x50/x50v devices, so you'd be advised to do some reading before you go with that one.

When you update to a new ROM version, you do also update the operating system - the OS is a part of the ROM.

So you just download the new ROM image and install it according to the instructions, and you have everything ready to run. The result is, as if you on a "normal" computer formated your harddisk and reinstalled Windows. Thus, you have to reinstall all your applications after the ROM upgrade.

Thanks! I did not realize the OS was going to be dowloaded with the ROM update/upgrade.. makes sense.

If I have programs installed (Scan Software and Bookseller Software) can I back those up to the 1G SD card that is installed in my device first? If so, how would I do that?

Thanks so much for helping a total Axim newbie!

No.. you'd need to re-install them from scratch...

Sprite and SPB backups both claim to let you restore after a rom upgrade, but in practice this can cause 'unstable' results
