Compact Flash/Secure Digital Cards

This probably has already been covered but I will ask it anyway. I am currently using a Sandisk 4GB Extreme III Compact Flash Card and a Sandisk
2GB Ultra Secure Digital Card in my Axim x51v. What are the largest CF/SD cards that can be used in the Axim x51v without doing anything difficult? I am pretty much a novice when it comes to computers.

Thanks for your help!

It should be noted that the Ax51v won't read a 16GB SDHC card out of the box. It must either be upgraded to WM6.x or install a driver to be able to read SDHC cards. I believe the max regular SD it will read is 4GB. As for CF I believe there is no limit, but I may be wrong.

Yes, 4G is the max SD with upgrading.

Please give specific instructions about the driver that will read SDHC cards. How concerned should I be to upgrade my X51v to WM 6.x. Last week I had to ask for help from Dell tech support and got very little help, let alone approval for the upgrade to WM6.x. Thanks in advance

@Only One Nurse-Dell never did supply an upgrade to WM6 or higher so they will not offer support for your device with that Operating system running on it. The SDHC fix available here only reads SDHC cards up to 4GB. 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards will only show 4GB of space available for use.

Upgrading your X51v to WM6.1 leaves you in a funny space. It's sort of an outlaw thing and you'll find most support for your updated device at the developers site where you downloaded the ROM.

Upgradeing your ROM is really easy as long as you follow all of the directions. I have flashed both my axim & 8525 plenty of times. I wouldn't do if your axim is still under warrenty though because it would void it. There are several individuals that frequet this site that have done it. There is another site xda-developers.com where you can find more info.

Check you this youtube video because it goes step by step.

Even though it will only show 4 gb does that mean it will not be able to access the rest. I have put the SDHC fix on my x51v and saw some 8gb cards on sale and thought I had better find out before I go by some.

If you have the SDHC fix installed then you should be able to see the 8G. Otherwise there would be no point in you installing the fix. Without the SDHC fix the axim will not even be able to read the card.

Sorry, but that's wrong.

With the SDHC driver installed you will only be able to see or access 4gb of an 8gb card.

The "fix" allows you to use the card up to 4 gb, that is the benefit.

If you don't have anything else that can read the 8gb, a camera for example, then there isn't much point in buying an 8gb SDHC card. A 4 gb SD card would be just as good.

At the moment, the only way to use the full capacity of a larger SDHC card is to upgrade to WM6....

So to sum up all this. You can use a 4G SD card without any fixes and the Compact cards is unlimited?

Yes you are pretty much right.

The only thing is, you have to make sure the 4gb sd card is not an sdhc card.
Newegg is one of the sites that features plain sd, although their selection keeps getting lower it seems:

Hi guys, I'm new here, so go easy on me. My wife has an Axim x50v. I am in charge of making sure all her tech toys work (she can bearly turn them on...lol). Anyways, I was trying to get the CF card to work. I have a 2GB Lexar CF Platinum II 80x and a couple old 64MB Sandisk CF cards, and when I insert them into the Axim and go to settings, and look at memory, under "storage card", it says "Total storage card memory: Not installed" Do I need to format these cards for the Axim or anything? I thought I had them working in the past without doing anything, but that's been a few years ago. Anyone got any ideas for me to try?

Thanks,
Mark

First, try formatting them with FAT32. If that doesn't work, just try plain old FAT16.
