I have windows VISTA and deleted a game I did not want thru the control panel.
Now I can not delete the icon it left behind.
Can anyone please advise how I can get rid of this icon that belonged to the game?

Open Windows Explorer, at the very top is the Desktop, open that, right click on the icon you want to delete and chose delete from the menu.
