Check your brightness settings. Windows Mobile has different brightness settings for battery vs. plugged in. Also, there are separate timeout settings which will cause the screen to dim after a period of inactivity.

It has been about 4 years since I have fiddled around with WM2003se -- I can't remember the exact steps to get into the brightness settings. Perhaps someone lurking around here can help us out?
