I've been wondering for awhile now what would be my next PDA after a few more years of using my beloved x51v. Since there's not really any support for these models anymore except this site, we're pretty much on our own.
I like the VGA models and I still haven't come around yet to the smaller screens of the smart phones and such. I still kinda like having my larger screened PDA and my smaller cell phone separate. I may eventually get a smart phone but I'd still keep my PDA for the most part.
x51v still the best for wifi work. i mostly use for email , web and skype , sony mylo is nice for this with keyboard , i am really feeling the tony hawk sidekick with that tmobile $1 per day prepaid deal.
I'm hoping to keep using my Axim for a few years, too, and I think it is fair to assume that a few years from now there will be a bunch of devices we can't know about now. If things don't progress much, the hp or htc lines look interesting. Who knows, maybe Dell will come to their senses and make something brilliant like the next generation Axim!
I'm with you on that, I will probably never get a converged device to replace my axim x51v. Granted I have an E61 Smartphone, but only because my brother thought he lost it, replaced it with an iphone, then found it under his car seat a week later. I have had my eye on the Htc advantage, but I can't justify spending that much on that type of device. A lot of the Htc phones look really nice like the touch hd, but again can't justify the money when the axim does almost everything I want. If Dell ever gets back into the handheld business like people keep saying, and the pocket pc's are made by htc then I think I would most likely go for those.
If it's viable with regards to your pocketbook I would suggest
picking up a HTC Advantage 7500-7501,it's everything the 51v is
and more.
I have one as well as the 51v and it's a fantastic piece of gear.
There are a few listed for sale on xda developers net right now.
I replaced my Dell Axim x50v with a HP Ipaq 211 and LOVE IT!! Big VGA screen, no cf leakage, huge amount of memory, wifi, gprs, and the works -- excellent replacement for me with these goodies and more.
I'm torn between the Touch Pro and the Experia X1. Neither device will replace my X51v as my Media Player/Ebook reader of choice though. I've got a G1 Android OS phone coming soon so I may not even get a new Windows Mobile Phone this year. It really all depends on what third party developers bring to the table once this Android based phone is released.

ASUS is supposed to be bringing out a new PDA pretty soon. It has a powerful processor but only uses one type of removable memory. Here are some details from CNet Taiwan (Babaelfish is doing the translation). If it had dual memory slots I'd be tempted even with the tiny screen.

I'll probably hop on the smartphone train and buy a tiny netbook when they have evolved a bit.
Smartphone for a quick TV fix and internet and the netbook for movies and (when they get there) e-books (slide-in keyboard or something similar) and more serious work.
I'm just waiting for it to happen, really.
Still waiting... (Yes, I know I probably have to wait a couple of years now with the recession and all, but hey - at least I'll get a good netbook)
I love my X51v, both of them. I use them for free at home or anywhere else I can get free wireless. My Sony cellphone and Blackberry can not browse the net like my X51v. The Sony is a good phone and great music player. The Blackberry is a great phone and email device. I don't want a phone as large as my Axim. I'd be dropping it all the time.
