Hi,
I recently bought an Axim X51 after using a Palm Tungsten T3. Although I had no problems using the Palm Desktop software I am struggling to use the Sync Center on Vista.
When I open Sync Center and open the folders on my Axim I copy them to a back up folder on my desktop, but I cannot find Contacts to back up.
Also if I try and open up the back up files, which are pdw files, I am unable to open them even though I thought Microsoft Works or Word should open them. I don’t have Outlook.
Palm Desktop let me organise Contacts, Picture, and Memo etc really easy. Am I doing something stupid, as I don’t want to start from scratch if I lose all my information? Microsoft Works has an option for synchronization to a Windows CE device but this doesn’t work. Is this all due to the fact I don’t have Outlook?
I only want to use my computer for backup so Outlook at about £80 is quite expensive.

Reason: your signature contains unacceptable links.
Typically Outlook is included with the purchase of a PDA (in the stack of CDs from the manufacturer), but many of the PDA phones do not have it.
You can also get a copy of Outlook if you get an Exchange hosted mail account.

Thanks for your guide lines. I am able to sync to Sync Center but just unable to see Contacts or read my Folders in Notes.
When I go to sync settings the following shows
Contacts Outlook has not been installed
Calender Outlook has not been installed
e-mail Outlook has not been installed
Tasks Outlook has not been installed
Notes Outlook has not been installed
Mobile Favorites Nothing Is Shown
Files I can click on this & Sync Settings goes to bold
Appointments cannot activate & Sync Settings pale
Contacts cannot activate & Sync Settings pale
Micro Soft Office One Note Ditto
As I said previously this is only for back-up. I only received one CD with the following contents: Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1 Connectivity Software
Pocket PC Enhancements.
I downloaded Sync Center from Microsoft.
I find it strange that I have to purchase £80 worth of software to use it to its maximum.:rolling:
Are you talking about Sync Center or the Windows Mobile Device Center? The Sync Center is used to sync other things to the computer, but not pocket pcs. If you have installed Windows Mobile Device Center to your computer, you can only sync contacts, tasks, notes, and appointments to Outlook on your computer....if you don't have Outlook installed, you will not be able to sync those things.
If all you are looking for is a way to backup your data, you might be better off using a pocket pc backup application, which will backup the data to an installed SD card and then you can copy that file to your computer for safekeeping. I don't have an Axim, but I think the X51 already has some backup software installed on it (from the factory).
What software are you referrring to in regards to your comment about having to "purchase £80 worth of software to use it to its maximum"? I think new Axim X51s came with a CD that included Outlook 2002 on it. If you did not get this CD when you purchased the device (used I supposed), then you are out of luck.

I should have made it more clear, I am talking about Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista) the toolbar icon says Sync Center but when opened says Device Center.
I know Dell don't make PDA's anymore but mine came from a reseller, new with a sealed Dell 2007 cd with no Outlook on it.
Regarding the software, if I wanted to use the Axim to its full potential then I would have to purchase a programme with Outlook on it, but as I only want to back things up I have taken your advice and backed up to a SD card using the Axim's back up programme.
Outlook is a full featured mail app and COOINCIDENTALLY works with PPCs to sync contacts etc between the device and PC... without outlook, it still functions
