Wi-Fi / Odyssey - Automatically connecting to open acces points

Hi,

I just got an Axim x51v this week. Very impressed so far!

The only thing I can't figure out is the wireless setup. I have the Dell WLAN utility and the Osyssey client installed. The first problem is that the "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" tick box DOESN'T exist in my Dell WLAN utility. Is this normal or do I need to reinstall the software? Secondly, I can enable Odyssey and have it connect to non-preferred networks, but every time I turn on my Axim wireless is disabled so I have to turn on wireless AND launch Odyssey to get it to connect.

Is there any easier way to do this? Will Odyssey take up a lot of RAM if it's always on? Is there better software out there to achieve this?

Ideally I would like to be notified with a sound that lets me know that a network was found and connected to.

Forgive me...I'm a total newbie with Axims and PDAs altogether!

Thanks a lot!
Ryan

You don't need to use Odyssey, the dell utility should work on it's own on most networks.

The Hardware switch on the side should turn the Wifi on for you by pushing it twice.
But be aware that it only turns on or off the last that was used. ie; BT and Wifi on, click twice, BT and Wifi off.
Only Wifi on, click twice, wifi off.
Only BT on, click twice, BT off. etc
When you are in range of a new Wifi network it should pop up with a message asking you if you want to connect.

Ikehikers Wifi guide will give you a more comprehensive answer.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So does this mean that the Dell utility CAN'T autmatically connect? I'll always have to choose "Connect" when a network is available?

I originally figured that I could leave my Axim in my pocket while, for example, walking down the street and it could automatically connect to open networks that show up and download my e-mail and send the items in my Outbox.

It will automatically connect to a network that you have already connected too, but not to any random ones.
