I believe that Windows Media Player does not play .avi files because I tried viewing my Ugly Betty episodes on the x51v and WMP does not support that file type. What I did was download a player that played that kind of file type and many others. Here's the link: Video player (The Core - TCPMP) - plays DIVX & other video types (install on Default/BIS/SD/CF memory):
TCPMP. RapidShare: Easy Filehosting [or just copy and paste that into your browser's search bar] =). Hope that helps!

I concur TCPMP is like VLC for Pocket PC.

Right you are John, even on a desktop system WMP will not play .avi (DivX) files. TCPMP supports this type and everything else I have tried so far.

And one of the most useful TCPMP links you will find here.

Please thank Unit Zero for his work.

Maybe you don't have the proper codec installed on your computer, but if you did, your desktop version of Windows Media Player could, in fact, play AVI files (mine does).

The mobile version of WMP is very limited and will only play Windows Media Audio (WMA); Windows Media Video (WMV); and MP3 files. There are no codecs to be found for the mobile version of WMP, so if you want to use different file formats on your mobile device you need to use a different media player, like TCPMP or CorePlayer.

If you install K-Lite codec, WMP could play just about anything. That's a hassle though. I prefer VLC much more.

I have TCPMP installed on my Axim and it's a great player!

On codecs. Argghhhh. I really can't figure out how to install those codecs and configure them on our desktops here at home. We presently are using K-Lite and by a miracle all our AVI files work :)

Yup! I agree w/Julie. My desktop version of WMP plays .avi files. Maybe it's a new version?
