Axim as a remote control?

Is it possible to use the Axim without any additional hardware as a remote controller? At what distance can it be used? Is it any shareware/freeware for this?

Well said Howard2K. Any of the remote software for PPCs will work on the Axim, even without extra hardware. However, the furthest range I've gotten from the stock IrDA port is about 4 to 5 feet. So it's pretty useless without a CF Infrared card. With the CF IR card, you can get 25 to 50 feet of IR range.

Thanks! What speed do you get when transferring files from/to your PC with the IR compared to the sync-cable?

I have never used IR for sycchronizing, so I'm really not sure. If I'm not mistaken though, it is about the same speed as a serial connection, which is a lot slower than USB.

I have tried using my X5 for remote without the ir cf card, and have had limited use, (range), as far as the software goes, the software out there works great. I do use mine the home office since the tv is about 4 feet away.

I think it's up to 115kb/s. Pretty damn slow. There is another standard for IrDA which uses a higher speed but I don't believe that the Axim has it.

I sync over IR now and then and it's not bad. I normally start the sync and come back 10 minutes later.
