How to backup original x51v ROM?

Hi,

I just bought an x51v on Ebay, and I'm hoping to try to upgrade it to WM6 or WM6.1, but I'd like to be able to restore it to it's original condition (e.g., if I decide not to stay with WM6/WM6.1).

I posted asking about this on Brighthand:

How to backup original x51v ROM? - Brighthand.com Smartphone and PDA Discussion Forums

I haven't received any responses to that post yet, but then I was looking around here, and found this thread/sticky in the Dell x50/x51 forum:

http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/t...-hp-tools.html

HOWEVER, in reading through that thread, it looks like it's for HP IPAQ, rather than for Dell Axim (even through it's in a Dell Axim forum).

Am I misunderstanding something, or, does the technique (and the enabler, etc.) described in that thread also work with using the updates from Dell??

So, as far as that thread, I'm a bit confused.

If the above technique does NOT work with a Dell Axim x51v, then can someone tell me how I can backup the original ROM that comes with the x51v, in such a way that I can restore the original image, if needed?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

I just found this other thread:

X51V stuck at blue Dell Logo screen.

and in the 11/20/08 by johnhu_2005, there's a link to a .nb0 and .crc on Rapidshare.

If I upgraded my x51v to (say) WM6, and decided I wanted to go back to WM5 (Dell A12), could I use the .nb0 and .crc pointed to in that link to do that?

If so, HOW do I use the .nb0 and .crc to restore to the x51v? That thread doesn't say how.

Thanks,
Jim

Hiya,
If you go to WM6 and do not like it for some reason, you can always reflash WM5 A12 the same way. But anytime you flash, you lose EVERYTHING. So be sure to back up files and programs. The upgrading/downgrading thing isn't as strict as on the PCs.

Hi,

Just so that I am clear: When you say "reflash WM5 A12 the same way", you mean that I can run the .EXE for A12 that I download from Dell's website to flash the x51v back to WM5 A12.

Is that correct?

So, there is no need to backup the original x51v's WM5 before upgrading to WM6 or WM6.1?

Thanks again,
Jim

By "Same way", I mean you can reflash it using .nb0 and .crc. It's the same idea as the Dell installer, but all you need extra is a SD card.

If you don't like WM6.1, just install the file I have on Rapidshare for AeroBoy.

Hi,

Thank you VERY much for your responses, and for still being here after all this time.

I feel much more assured if I give that a shot.

Thanks a lot!

Jim
