Is the upgrade stable?

Yes there is. There is a pretty decent performance difference but there are of course some application/device incompatabilities. The A05 ROM is the stable one. A04 is the unstable one.

I still run PPC2002. I don't think I'll upgrade for another month or two.

jeffm--
I'm not sure what you mean. There is no difference between PPC 2003 and WM 2003--same operating system. If you are asking if there is a difference between PPC 2002 and WM 2003, yes, 2003 is a new operating system. The A05 ROM version of WM 2003 that Dell is shipping now is stable and works very well. Some are reporting issues, but most find it fast and a very nice experience.

Question

If there is no difference between PPC 2003 and WM 2003, why do they use different names? It is still not clear to me.

That's actually a very good question. Microsoft's name for the OS is "Windows Mobile 2003" (WM2003) but the upgrade disks from Dell say "Microsoft Pocket PC 2003" (PPC2003). It's not clear to me whether Dell and Microsoft can't get their act together, whether PPC2003 is Dell's particular version of the OS, or something else.

Does anyone know what other PPC manufacturers call their 2003 OS?

Finaly something official:

This i found on the Microsoft Site (virtual Press room):

Announcing. . .

Windows Mobile. This is the new, global brand for mobile software that runs Pocket PC and Smartphone devices. Windows Mobile strategically aligns a core Microsoft® brand - Windows® - with what has become a core focus for the company: mobile software. (Note: In some cases new products will be referred to as Pocket PC 2003 which is the same software release.).......

Microsoft used to call it pocket pc 2002, but now they are creating an os for several connected and portable devices INCLUDING pocket pc's, they have changed the name, to the long winder but logical:

Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC's.

they could have the same as abover but for "Smartphones" or "Media Centres", "Set top boxes" "Car Radios" etc etc

I haven't heard anything recently, but I know when I ordered back in June it was $29.95. Just call Dell and they can take your order.

maybe it is because the new name is Windows mobile 2003. And they also sau pocket pc 2003 so that people will recognize that windows mobile is like pocket pc.
