Installing Official Updates to X51 from Dell

Hi everyone,

I've been looking around in the forum to tell me what I'm doing wrong, but could not manage to find it so here it goes.

My friend asked me to update his x51 with the current wireless patch from dell. I downloaded a self extracting file named R136899, unzipped all the files to the default directory. Followed the instructions on Dell's website to install the file, which is below.

When I executed the file, it created another rar file(WiFi_A_ColAdds) and read me file. Then I extracted the rar file which provided 2 additional files which are:

tiacxwln.001
WIFIPA~1.000

If I follow the Dell guide, I need to go start menu>run type C:\dell\Drivers\R136899 and all it will do is to open the extraction folder. I believe I'm missing something as it says in the guide that I'll be following the on-screen installation instructions at that point.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance...

Download

1. Click Download Now, to download the file.
2. When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In: window appears.
3. From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4. If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file icon appears on your desktop.

Installation guide:

1. Double-click the new icon on the desktop. For example labeled R12345.EXE.
2. The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R12345.EXE. (Example path). Write down this path so the executable (Example - Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3. The Self-Extractor window appears.
4. Click OK.
5. After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it.
6. Click the Start button and then click Run.
7. Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R12345 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

Are you doing this via active sync? I don't think these files can go directly to the ppc.

What I think is going on is that dell usually puts the files in a self-extracting (compressed) exe file, so you extract the files first. I think the file "WiFi_A_ColAdds" is not a rar file as you originally thought, but rather an installation cab file, so all you need to do is to copy the cab file (as-is) over to your axim and execute it from there. To verify that it's a cab file, you can go into folder options (tools>folder options) and uncheck the option for "hide extensions for known file types" under the "view" tab.
