Newbie having trouble sync'ing up axim x50
Hi, ran across this site and it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for in regards to some of the problems I've encountered with my Axim. Basically I have an Axim x50 ( not top of the line I know, but hey you have to start some where :)) Now I am able to connect to active sync and it even says connected ( via usb/cradle) but if I hit explore it gives me this error message " Critical Communication Services has failed to start, try resetting the mobile device and connect again". Now I recently downloaded the latest version of active - sync, so that shouldn't be the problem. I've removed the battery, done a hard reset after another problem with synching up with the inbox of the PDA and now I get this message. I'm just looking to transfer files from my comp to the Axim, and any help would be grrrrrrrreatly appreciated. I have the entry level model only with bluetooth, so no wifi
If you have aim and could possibly walk me through the process my s/n is : stoneassylum
MSN s/n : StOnEaSyLum
Thank Y'all!

A few things come to mind:
A firewall is blocking the connection, even if you don't have an 'add on' firewall, the Windows one can cause problems. Start by disabling it just to check but you should be able to allow AS access.
If you have Vista on the PC, you need to use Windows Mobile Device, not ActiveSync (you can find it on M$'s website or search here at Mobility Site for a link).
Some users have reported this problem do to a hardware failure with the cradle/cable they are using for the connection. The first step might be to try a different USB port on your PC.

Thanks Hiker, I have turned the firewall off as I thought that may have been the problem, but still had the same error message. I'm running just windows XP, so nothing special in that department. I tried a couple different ports and still same result . Do you know if windows xp has a regular firewall that comes standard that I may not be aware of? Because the firewall I use is look and stop.

Yes, WinXP has its own firewall which is active by default. I think you can find it through the control panel. If you cannot find it, post back and (hopefully) someone will know the answer off the top of their head. If not, I'll try to find it.

I found the xp firewall and turned it off. Still have the same result, I'm starting to think it's a hardware problem in the Axim itself. My last Axim plugged right up and synced without a problem, I hope this is an easy fix.
