Question question about x50 and compact flash and sd cards...

Was curious if you could use a high capacity cf or sd card like 32gb in an entry level dell axim x50? And if there isn't, is it possible to get around it?

Thanks!

I haven't seen anything about the HC cards working, unfortunately. I know a number of users have used CF-encased miniature hard drives. Just out of curiosity, are you envisioning using that much space for movies or music for playback?

Ah, and yes mostly for that purpose and some games and anything else entertaining. I'll have to check out "CF-encased miniature hard drives" never heard of it. I'm just looking for an easy way to use my axim like an mp3/video player for long trips and such. Thank you for the response!

The drivers that are available for the X50 only work for the high end models, I think and even when the do work they only give you access to 4gig of an SDHC card.

CF cards on the other hand are theoretically only limited by your budget.
16 or 32 should keep you happy.

The micro drive type is older technology and these days you may as well avoid them, moving parts, noise, more battery drain etc..

I have a 4Gb CF and a 2Gb SD cards installed and have plenty of room for a lot of programs. Unless you're planning on a lot of video or music, those should be plenty and are fairly inexpensive right now.

IF I was buying a CF card today, I'd probably go with the 8Gb CF card. 2Gb is the largest SD card the x50 low, like mine, will recognize. And, stay away from the SDHC in your x50.

SDHC isn't natively compatible with WM5 and older.

There is an SDHC driver that works on X50V and X51V (Not certain about Non Vs) that will let you use up to 4Gig of an SDHC card.

WM 6 has SDHC drivers built in.

Box basically answered your question to me. :)

I haven't tried downloading the SDHC driver myself. I seem to remember reading that the x50 low and mid with WM2003SE still wouldn't recognize anything above 2Gb. Even if the card was 4Gb. So, I've stayed away from SDHC. And, he has the same x50 as I do. :exc:

I have a 4GB SD card and my system doesn't recognize it. Why would that be?

Have you checked that it is SD and not SDHC?

I believe you are probably right and that it is and SDHC. I guess I will have to use it in my camera instead.

If you install the driver that you will find in the first post of this thread it should work.
But only up to 4gig, so don't go buying any larger ones and expect them to work too.

Assuming you have an X51v as you said in the other thread.
