Question about the "Volt" and "Ampere" to charge the Dell GPS

Hi, I have an old Dell GPS system, which I think runs on 5V and 1.2A. I am thinking about buying a universal car charger to use with it. Even though I kinda have an idea of what volt and ampere means, I just want to be sure as not to damage the GPS:

1) If the machine requires 5V, the charger must supplies 5V exact right? The adapter cannot supply like 4.5V or 6V?

2) What's about the Ampere? As far as I know, if the charger supplies more Amp than what the GPS requires (like 2A charger for 1.2A GPS system), it is OK, but it cannot be less?

Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I have a BT-309 that I don't use anymore but there is a sticker on the bottom.

Input 5V 2A

I purchased my Axim & GPS as a system. The output of the charger in 5V 2A

To ansewer your question if you are try to charge at 2A an battery that requires 1.2A. You could possibly damage your GPS.

5V plus or minus 10% is usually acceptable. I wouldn't use your examples of 4.5 or 6v.

Your charger should supply at least as much current (amps) as required. Less amps may still work but it will take longer to charge.
