I've been trying to load my email into Outlook remotely. (Not via Active Sync). The problem is, my ISP requires a specific port number for incoming and outgoing email. Does anyone know a way to set the port number?

I want to make sure I understand you correctly - by port number - are you referring to the port number that smtp and pop use? The numbers are 110 and 25 and are standard TCP/IP ports.
I believe your looking for some other type of number or address. All that is needed to setup a typical pop mail account is - an active connection to the internet, a mail client like outlook configured with the proper mail server address, username and password.
In any event, you may want to call your ISP for the settings.

No, I use ATT Broadband. If you are not on their network, you need to set your email program to look for specific non standard ports (465 for outgoing mail and 995 for incoming) to download your email. As far as I can tell Pocket Outlook doesn't support this.
It's kind of a pain since there web site only supports IE 5.0 and above, I cannot access email via the web either. (I'm not game for the registry hack).
They do support forwarding, so I think I'm just going to automatically forward my mail to another server that I can hook up to. However, if you have any ideas, that would be great.

Please see my last post under Brain Cramp. I didn't have to mess with any ATT Broadband port settings to get my internet mail service to work.

alert5,
Are you connecting through your PC? I can do this as well. What I am trying to do is connect to the ATTBI POP3 mail server through my cell phone. I'm coming in via Verizon so this is where the problem comes in. According to their web site, to access your mail remotely (In other words, from other than through their cable), you need to look for a specific port.
If you are connecting other than through your PC, I'd be interested. I get a timeout error going through the cell phone, but when I connect through the cradle it works fine, so I know I didn't fat finger any of the setup.

On my home network the Axim is just another device with direct wireless connection through my Linksys AP. I don't connect through another computer and other computers on my network don't even need to be turned on to access my pop3 email and surf the web.
The only time I use activesync (wirelessly as well) is for:
1. Synchronizing my calendar, tasks, IE favorites, but not my Outlook inbox since I receive all my message traffic on both devices independently.
2. For loading applications and copying files from my desktop which has the WindowsCE and activesync software running on it.
The only time I'll ever need the USB cradle connection is if and when I do a hard reset and have to create a partnership all over again.
Does this make sense?

I forgot to address your question about port numbers. With ATT broadband all I had to do was setup a new internet mail service on the Axim to my existing account using all the same data that exists on my desktop. Again the Axim is just another computer on my network, so following the steps in the Axim for setting up a pop3 service just required that I input the same username, password and inbound and outbound URLs used by ATT. When you get through this process you'll have two mail services to choose from...one is called "activesync" and the other is whatever name you gave to the new service.
The Axim new service setup prompts for:
Name - This can be anything
Username - Must match your existing mail account as in "name@attbi.com"
Password - Must match the existing password for the account
POP3 address - for ATT its just "mail.attbi.com" for both incoming and outgoing mail
The Axim new service setup by default is set to provide only message headers so you must click the box that says "Entire Message".
At no time did I have to even think about port settings. I don't know about your ISP, but I think if you match an existing service on the Axim, the required ports are automatically opened.

I to am having the same difficulty. I want to access my ATTBI(now Comcast) mail account wirelessly with my cell phone, via at&t wireless, t68i and bluetooth. To access the pop and smtp services from external, the ports are different than the normail 110 and 25. I was wondering if anybody knew of any registry hacks to change the default ports.

You can set the port numbers as a suffix on the addresses (URL) using a colon. For example:
pop.domain.com:110
smtp.domain.com:25
Or for the port numbers "alert5" indicated:
mail.attbi.com:995 (if this is the correct URL for incoming mail)
smtp.attbi.com:465 (if this is the correct URL for outgoing mail)

I'm trying to do the same thing, access the attbi pop server thru my cell phone (also Verizon) while travelling. I don't care so much about the smtp (outgoing) server since I have other accounts available to send mail, but I would like to at least be able to receive my attbi email.
I tried the above suggestion on how to specify non-standard ports to the servers but this did not work using the PocketPC's built-in email application. Even attbi's incoming mail server (pop) requires "authentification" when accessed from off their network and I have not been able to do this, I assume because I can't access their non-standard ports but there may be SSL issues here as well.
Fortunately, attbi can be set to forward mail automatically to another address and this is the method I have been using but I would prefer direct access.
Anyone else out there have success with getting attbi email while off their network on a PDA?
