Question Some questions about the axim to you experienced users!!

Hi!

I'm thinking of buying an axim x5 (performance) but I have some questions for you experienced users. I would like to use the axim for the calender, and playing game boy/nes games, listening to music, and watching movies. How well does the axim work for these purposes? Can you use it for watching movies, or will the
movies be choppy and so on, the same for playing gameboy and nes games, do they run at full speed and with sound? How-bout the mp3 player, is the sound good (it's stereo I hope?). Also, what about storing, can you connect USB hard-drives and USB cd-rom readers to the axim? I would really appreciate if anyone could like to answer my questions!

Thank you in advance! :D

mp3's are fine. you can use the supplied pocket version of winamp or download a third party player (some of which are free. yes it is in stereo. no usb connection. however you can buy some pretty big storage cards for the ax. i use a 256 MB SD and CF card. run third party programs off of the SD card. hope this helps. can't address the gaming/movie questions. :D

and welcome to aximsite.com! :yeah:

the axim is the best, but then again every ppc has its downflaws
the built in calender is great but you can alweays download better, i am always playing old nes games with my axim, it works great with and without sound, battery life is long compared to most other pda's but if that worries you u can always buy another battery.
Movies work great on the axim and if you compress them right http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...threadid=3692, they should run great, but you can always tweak the settings to get the file size lower or higher, so the quality is better or worse.

lets see what else, for mp3 (u'll probobly want to get u get a storage card for this and the movies) windows media player is built in and works fine, but you can also download many other great players right here at aximisite. the quality is very good however the speaker is mono only. thats the only downflaw, but your probobly going to want to get headphones anyway. as i said battery time is better than most. storing on this axim is either compactflash(cf), or secure digital(sd), the only pda that i know of that supports usb is the toshiba 7xx, which other than that and the built in wifi, is a step down from the axim or so im told, however you can get this if ur set on usb you can get this http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/...ges/cfu1u.html but it is only usb 1.1, which is slower, also new technology will come and caompactflash hard drives and cd-rom readers may soon be available (i hope), you can always get enough memory through this set up if you want a hard drive http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...5&pagenumber=1

but all in all, i think your best bet would definately be with the axim

good luck and welcome to aximsite!

And please post more replies to this thread, think many new users are interested in this. Also I would still like to know how long the battery will last if you are watching movies on the axim!

Also I must ask, when you play gameboy/nes games can you click two buttons at the same time when playing (heard some ipaqs had problems with this)? And also what emulator should I use??? And finally I want lots of info about movies, what is the quality like (I was thinking of watching movies on the train home and so on), battery time and what filesize does a movie on the axim normally have? /korvmedtapet

Check out the multimedia forum for info on movies. My version of Shrek for the PPC is 89 MB, but my version of Lilo and Stitch for the PPC is 141 MB.

I use MorphGear for my emulator, but a lot of people like Pocket Nester.

korvmedtapet,

No big deal with the cross post. The biggest issue I see with it is that people responding to you may not know what already's been said so it's best to keep the answers all in one place.

I think you'll be happy with the Axim. My only issue with it is the size (smaller would be nice) but I also really like having both CF and sd slots and it would be hard to make it smaller and keep both of those. We'll have to see how long I can resist the smaller X3 when it's finally released :D

Big Smile

Thank you everyone! Okey i'm going to take a look in the multimedia forum. One of the best reasons of buying the axim I think is the price, the X3 you say? Is there any info about it anywhere, like what it is going to cost and when it will be released?

all i know is that it will be smaller and it wont have a cf slot. i personally wont be getting one because other than that i think it has the same specs as the axim x5 advanced(which i have) but check this out

In addition to the site mpbasher52 posted, there is an entire forum here dedicated to the X3 "rumors." Some things you should take with a grain of salt but I suspect we are talking days or at most a few weeks for the release.

Price is expected to be similar to the X5 and with two models (one with built-in WiFi, one without). No CF slot but with an SDIO and, as I mentioned above - smaller.

Anyway, read more at Dell Axim X3 Pre-Release Party.
