Try holding it in for a couple of seconds, it should go off. There are also a lot of 3rd party apps that you can use to accomplish this without using the hardware button. There are free and pay versions. I reccommend Battery Pack 2003 by Omega One. It's not free but I find it very useful beyond just the shutdown option.

Yes, press the power button, but don't hold the power button down.

A quick press of the power button will turn on/off the Ax. Holding the power button will dim the backlight.

Thanks for clearing that up Chris. On my read through of what I wrote I realzied I might have misled. You know how it is when you're so used to doing something that to have to think about it or explain it complicates the whole process?

I'm lucky I remembered it at all. I haven't touched the power button since the first or second week I had my Ax (back in January...). I use hardware buttons to boot up and HandyMenu to shut down/dim /etc.

Don't forget the freeby Icbar that will also do this, as well as a variety of other functions.

I use the Power off option in Battery Bar to turn my Axim off.

I don't seem to have such option in my version of ICBar... How do you switch the Axim off with ICBar?

Go to the settings menu. There you can view all the possibilities for configuiring IcBar. For example, you can select what various buttons will do and add a couple of buttons as well, select whether or not to display time and date on the bar, etc. IMHO, if you are using IcBar right "out of the box", you are not taking full advantage of it.
