I had the same troubles yesterday, with Windows XP.

The way I got it working:
Plugged in the Axim to it's cable, after Windows was loaded.

Once all the ActiveSync noises were done, I unplugged the USB end, waited for the ActiveSync disconnect noises were done, and plugged it into the other USB port. Windows put up something about installing Dell USB drivers, then ActiceSync asked if I wanted to create a full partnership or a guest account with the Axim, I chose full partnership. It asked if the Axim was only going to be synced to only this computer, I said yes (you need to say yes, I tried it once saying no and it didn't work).

Activesync now seems to work fully and doesn't disconnect after a few minutes.

The moving from one USB port to another trick often fixes wierd USB problems.

Just an update:

I went out today and bought a cheap ($10) USB 2.0 PCI card and threw it in my pc. SURPRISE! Activesync now works fine! What the heck?!? Is there a problem with integrated USB ports?

But the d-pad is still an issue since the patch from Dell does not correct physical problems......

The real trick would be to have a PC where all the usb ports work.

I had the same problem today at work. It would connect for like a minute and then disconnect. I downloaded the newest Intel Corporation Intel 800 Series Chipset for the dell Optiplex 150 that I am using (I suspect that there is something similiar for the Dimesnion). After that it worked with no problems.

just checked the support site and there are drivers for this under the Chipset downloads for the dimension 4100

Basically USB is a "Not ready for prime time" interface. It's very flaky, subject to major interference from any external signal, and the technology is totally unready for reliable communications. Unfortunately, it's also cheap to implement and can be advertised as "fast" compared to more robust protocols, so the PC makers have all jumped on the bandwagon. We suffer in the real world because with USB everybody gets to point fingers at everybody else...

I got this problem - just turned out that I needed to push the axim right into the cradle slot - it will charge if loosely 'placed' but you need to push it in to sync !!!!!

The solution is to push the axim all the way in the cradle. I had that error when I first started out, that was just yesterday. Unplug it and replug all the way in.
