I'm not getting any help from the Dell forums so maybe you guys can help.......here it goes:

I installed Activesync 3.5 exactly how the directions tell you to. My Axim will sync up for a couple minutes, then I get disconnected and can't reconnect. I've tried installing Activesync 3.5 several times as well as Activesync 3.6. I've also tried soft and hard resets on my Axim. Nothing seems to work. I've seen several posts about Activesync problems....but no real answers. Any suggestions? Anything I may be overlooking?

I'm running a Dell Dimension 4100 and Windows 2000 Pro w/ service pack 2. My Axim is the 400Mhz version and I'm using the USB cradle.

Do you have the Axim connected though a hub? If so, connect it directly to the computer and not through the hub. This is a known issue with Dell Axims.

No hub. It's connected directly to the PC. No weird configurations or anything. Just a computer and my Axim.

When I get disconnected and try to reconnect, I just get this:

Egan311,
I'm not a PDA Pro by any means but I know that message. Maybe I can help.
1. Is the Axim in the crable after you plug in the USB? (My wife got a kick out my ranting about "Not detecting the device" because it wasn't even in the cradle.)
2. By the way, the latest Activesync version is 3.6.
Hope it helps.
Cheers
Tokyo J

By the way...does anyone know how to solve this program error message? " WCESMgr.exe "
I can sync everything EXCEPT email. The boxes are checked, and days, size limits are set correctly in settings, but emails just won't jump over
Thanks.

This same thing happened to me. I had to disconnect the other device using the 2nd USB port (my ex-palm) and then let it detect. Do you have a device on your 2nd port? Disconnect the usb connex to your pc, then plugin the usb from the axim, then see if it detects and works fine.

I've read on other forums that the cradle draws alot of power and some USB ports can't handle it. I bet you don't get the same problem if you use the travel cable. Dells "solution" is to use a USB 2.0 card. <_<

I may not be the best person to try to answer this, since I'm waiting quite impatiently for my Axim to arrive. However, I found something that might be worth trying. I'm attaching the most recent windows drivers for the Axim USB sync from Dell's site. Based on your description, I suspect this might clear things up. And if it doesn't, well you can still feel good knowing you've got updated software, huh?!

Oops! It won't let me attach this type of file so I'll have just post a link R55367.EXE from support.dell.com

Best of luck!

(By the way, a friend and I both ordered our Axims on 1/15, but the order didn't seem to process until the 20th... I wasn't terribly worried because I figure there were a LOT of people trying to get in before the rebate deadline. I was originally estimated shipment for the 4th, but when the order was confirmed I got dates of 2/14-18 for delivery. Just got the tracking number and my friend's ship date has been moved up to tomorrow, the 7th...but for some unknown reason mine isn't trackable yet!! This isn't a complaint at all, I'm just really really really excited to get my new toy and I don't wanna wait any longer! Waaah! ;)

Those drivers are the same that are on the CD-ROM. Thats always a good idea though to first make sure your drivers are up to date....

Plug in the Ax to the cradle. Go to Device Manager. It's on the PC under Control Panel>System>Hardware

Under "Windows CE USB Devices" you should see an entry for "Dell Axim USB Sync"

If it's not there, you don't have the USB Drivers from Dell installed. Some folks have had success getting the drivers installed by putting the Ax in the cradle and doing a soft reset. Apparently that wakes up the USB drivers in a different way and let's the hardware get recognized properly.

Yes, the Axim is securely in the cradle. Like I said, I can connect for a couple minutes. Then, it drops the connection and I can't reconnect. That's when I get that error message. I've tried both Activesync 3.5 and 3.6.....but neither seems to make much difference. I don't have any other USB devices connected, and the drivers seem to be installed correctly. Device Manager shows my Dell Axim under USB devices. Maybe the cradle is bad or there is a software conflict. Those are the only things I can think of. And I refuse to buy new hardware just to make this thing work......

<_<

I know the cradle has some trouble with some USB ports... I'd try it on another computer to see if that is the case. A friend of mine got Dell to send him a new USB 2.0 PCI card since he was having trouble on his Dimension 8100....

Thanks for everyone's input. I guess this is something I'll have to try to work out with <gulp> Dell's tech support. Oh well.....I'll probably need to get a replacement Axim anyways.....since my d-pad doesn' t work properly. I always have the worst luck!

Other than the sync problems and d-pad issues, I really like the Axim! ;)
