Question Anti-Virus Software

Um. I was thinking the other day. As a support analyst for Desktops, I've been doing a lot of hole patching lately. Who/where/Should I be looking at Anti-Virus software for the PPC? I'd think so, but I havn't herd anyone talk about it.

there's only a couple viruses out there that can threaten the ppc. i'm sure there are more to come as things progress. it can't hurt to be protected. i use airscanner. it's a free download that you can get in the download section of this site.

Cool

Cool, Mine came with the trial versions of McAfee but I didn't load it as I suspect that it will only update or work correctly for 30 days. I'll check it out. Thanks.

where can I find more information on these 'couple of viruses ... that can threaten the ppc'? I had it on good authority not too long ago that there were none.

I'm not sure how well this one works compared to McAfee, but it looks pretty good, runs pretty quick, and is supports internet updates.

I've installed the McAfee beta version as well. It seems a little quicker than airsoft.

There are not any viruses for PPC. There are a few viruses for Palm. No need to get Anti-Virus software for a PPC. I know this for sure.

it's still a good idea to have it because the people that write viruses are always one step ahead of the people that write the fixes. better safe than sorry right?

No, not really. It would take up space on your PPC, and since there are no viruses for it yet, and PPC has been around for a while now, they probably won't start showing up all of a sudden.

the operative word being "yet". a little space is trivial compared to security and piece of mind. the ppc hasn't been around that long, but as the format becomes increasingly popular, the underbelly of humanity will most definately show itself. they will start showing up all of a sudden. trust me, one of my job functions is virus cleansing. if you want to roll the dice, be my guest.

Having a virus scanner on your PPC is like having a car alarm for your Yugo. You can do it but it's dumb.

aviationwiz and cherdman have a point, for now, but since we cannot see into the future, I installed Airscanner and really like it. It's easy to configure and is a small program. Get it for free on Zdnet or go to the website AximJoe gave you

Except it won't catch anything unless you update the definitions when and if a virus comes out.

As they say, "an ounce of prevention" the apps are no bigger than any other app, my SD card is no worse off having an AV app on it.

Assuming it'll never happen is about the silliest stance I've heard. Do we really think script kiddies and virii losers won't decide to expand their horizons sooner or later?
