Can a PPC replace a PC?

Ok, here is the situation. I have a access to a desktop PC a few times a week at my girlfriends house. I am in school and need a computer just for word, excel, powerpoint and email and MP3 along with organizing my life.

So, if I get an X3 or X5, can't I use that for just about everything and then just sync up with her PC when I come over every few days? I could probably get a foldable keyboard and type up my assignments and print it directly to my printer which I have at my place.

Money is just kinda tight so I don't want to get a PC, I want to get a pocket PC instead and use her pc when I need a real PC.

PS - the axim will not be used for internet at all. I just want to download my email from her pc onto my axim and go.

I hate to say it, but your handheld may last longer than your girlfriend, which puts you in a position of no one to sync with .. in more ways than one. And if you have to hard reset, what then?:crooked:

That is funny, but seriously, can I live with just a PPC and sync up every few days at someone else's place? I just need something for word, excel, downloading emails, etc like I mentioned and mp3.

rickgreen is right,

The Axim might last longer than your girlfriend, then you don't have any way to synch up. Then if you need to hard reset, your screwed, because you loose all your data.

We already said No. It just wouldn't work, especially taking into effect the chance of your g/f dumping you. You would want your own PC to synch with. Why not just ditch the idea of getting a PPC, and get a notebook if you want portability, or a desktop if you don't care about portability.

Honestly, I would say No. The versions of Word and Excel on the PPC are very scaled down versions. In Word, you don't have the formatting options, and in Excel you only have the basic formulas.

Get an inexpensive used laptop from a reputable source. For school stuff, you won't need a super fast processor. And you'll appreciate a larger screen, larger keyboard, and the ability to use a mouse when your up late working on papers and presenations.

I think its possible to use a ppc as an everyday pc. And as for hardresseting etc. Why not just back up everything to a memory card? I use my phone to download all my emails, surf the web etc.

But honestly, ppc over a real pc??? Not by far. And have you ever seen those thiny keyboards??

LOL you guys are really hurting him...
Anyway, for your situation, you might want to consider a PPC.
But after you spend your money on the sd card and keyboard, you could get a refurbished PC...
Sooner or later you will have to get a laptop, but for now if you need it urgently, you should go get it as the prices of laptops are going to drop very soon judging by the market and technological advances now.

And besides you said you could just print your documents directly to your Printer. That's not possible without a bluetooth compatible printer and a bluetooth card for your axim. Also you would need to buy software to even give your Pocket Word & Excel Documents the option to print.

Also check at www.usedhandhelds.com , then you could buy a cheap handheld pc or pocket pc for like $100. Then you could buy a cheap used laptop like others have suggested.

Laptop for now....down the road someday you can add a ppc. Based on what you're telling us and what your needs are, a ppc in this case is only going to leave you frustrated.

I had to use my axim for about 2 months with out a computer.......

It is hard, but it is also not that bad. I also would reccommend a cheap win95/98 laptop.

Ibm is a good brand.;)
used to have 1 myself.

Hope that helps.:D
