Question Any downsides to installing apps to storage card?

Hi all, I'm wondering are there any downsides to installing apps to the storage card versus storing to RAM? Say for example I installed Pocket MVP to one SD card. But I want to use it to play movies on another SD card. Is this possible? Can I start the program, remove the SD card that holds the program, insert another SD card and play movies off it? It seems that if that's not possible, then I would want most of my apps in RAM. Any insights? Thanks.

Yes, that would be a problem. I personally never remove my sd card, so I don't have that problem. I swap out my cf cards. If your using an X3, you'll have to install your apps into ram or built-in storage.

The other drawback I've found to installing software to an SD card is that opening folders from the start menu (like Games or Programs) is much slower. This is because the Pocket PC has to load the image from the .EXE file before it can display it to you. Since the .EXE is on the SD card, this is slower than if the application is in RAM.

This issue is especially noticeable if you have a lot of games in a folder. It takes several seconds to load the folder icons. Until that's done, you can't do anything with your Pocket PC. Very annoying.

I've also noticed larger .EXE files take much longer to load the icon for some reason.

I expect developers could work around this problem by creating a small .EXE file for quick loading of the icon, then put the rest of the code in a .DLL. None of them seem to do this, though.

i keep almost every app on my PPC and the files (documents, spreadsheets, mp3, videos) on the SD card. the only exception are large games like quake and emulators with their games.

the only downside REALLY is slower performace when loading the program...and also, you risk having it gettin erased if something happens to ur card...but otherwise, i'd recommed using that if u MUST

I have been running most of my applications from the SD card, maybe it isn't practical, but it doesn't fill up the main memory. The only time I found I had a problem is when I wanted to use a SD card from Microsoft that had some games and themes on it. I keep my ebooks and one application on there "WisBar Advanced"

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I'll keep the mission critical apps in RAM and install everything else on the SD card.
