Axim on order - 2 weeks to go (and counting)........ must prep!!!

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on any "must do's" as soon as Axim is recieved? For example, any 'gotta-do' OS Patches (I assume from Dell, not MS - any URL's?)? What about the "D-Button Patch" (or as someone in the forums said - "The Fix for the D-Button patch..or is it a patch for the fix??"). Any "must-have" utilities? (Analogy - Pre WinXP, WinZip was a must have for Windows). I'm sure you get the idea.... would really appreciate anyone posting an idiot's ( ;) ) guide!!!

How about a "Pinned" post in one of the Forums for an "Axim post-delivery, before you start using it" Guide?

Thanks,

P.

After you get your ax all loaded up and configured, do a backup. That way, when you start adding trial software, freeware, etc, and testing out the capabilities, you can go back to a working configuration without reinstalling everything.

You will find that some apps just won't uninstall properly, and need a good hard shove to get off your PPC.

Also, if you travel and are away from your computer alot consider using cabinstl ( from here: http://www.geocities.com/s_k_s_k_s_kru/#ci ) and saving some of your more important appplication .cab files on a cf or sd card. This way you can reinstall the application (to the directory of your choice, and without deleting the .cab file) without needing to connect to a computer. Most .cab files can be found on you desktop in the /program files/activesync/program name directory. This is good for emergency situations where your backup file is corrupt and won't let you restore.

Also, don't forget a screen protector, because sometimes bad things happen to good PPC's.

Learn to use what comes on the machine efficiently. Don't go load every piece of software that you can find on it immediately. Learn to find your way around from one application to another as there are many ways to do things on the Axim. Practice the Letter Recognizer and Transcriber. It takes a little time to become proficient but worth the time and effort.

Yes, I put on a screen protector the moment I peeled off the plastic that was on the screen when it was shipped. Mine are WriteRights that I had left over from a Jornada and had to cut them to the right size.

Yes, do a backup before loading unfamiliar software.

Don't let the battery run all the way down.

Register the Reader while connected to the internet.

Check all the options on various screens and experiment with different settings.

Have fun!

I know this is heretical to most of us, but read the User's Guide. Then read it again. Then, while it's charging, read it again. And after playing with the Ax for a few days, read the Guide one more time. It actually has about 90% of the questions I've seen here answered, and has a lot of useful information that can save you time and aggravation.

Personally, I find that I'm so familiar with PC hardware and software that I can just jump in and get going, using manuals as an occasional reference for some of the more exotic features. Then again, I've been playing with computers since I was twelve.
