Hi All
I've just preordered my Axim (UK) and was wondering if anyone has tried using AudiblePlayer with it. Any comments on soundquality, quirks, etc.
It's not a dealbreaker, but I would like to listen to my audiobooks on it when stuck on the train, which I can't really do with my current PDA (Compaq Aero 2120) ;)
Also, can anyone tell me the size of the headphone socket. I'm presuming, as its not stated anywhere that its a 3.5mm socket not a 2.5, but I just want to check.
Cheers in advance for any help

I use the Audible player constantly. I keep multiple books loaded on memory cards all the time. Between my wife and I, our subscription total is four books per month, so I have quite a few to choose from. (By the way, my favorite author for audio books is Terry Pratchett (for print books, too.) I have several styles of standard Walkman-style headsets -- ear buds, super-light, foldable, sports -- all work fine.
A couple of notes:
Audible player will automatically continue down its playlist. It also reacts to the scroll wheel on the left of the Axim. So, for Audible Books, I generally use the Microsoft Reader. It lists the Audible books in the library and plays it using the Audible player as a plug-in. The interface is not as dynamic for fast forwarding and rewinding, but it is less sensitive to accidental button presses, and does not automatically start the next book.
Also, remember to PAUSE/STOP your book before powering off the Axim , otherwise, you will get caught in a loop that could require you to soft reset (although completely exiting Audible Player or Reader usually works).

For the installation to the PocketPC, you select the HP Jornada (Pocket PC 2002). For activating it as a portable device from Audible Manager, the manufacturer is: Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC 2002. When you select the PocketPC as your device, Audible will not see the CF until it has connected to the Axim. If you're still having problems, let me know.

Great. And, I mentioned in an earlier posting, you might want to give Microsoft Reader a try if the Audible Player's button sensitivities causes you grief.
Between my 256 MB CF and 256 MB SD, I have close to 60 hours of listening on my Axim at any given time. If I opened and listened with the Audible Player, it would mindlessly attempt to play them in a continuous stream until the battery ran out.

Audible Player and memory management
I have a brand new Axim, running the most current version of everything. I've just installed the audible player, and have not had any problems transferring books, listening, etc. BUT -- Audible does not seem to release memory even when it is stopped. I stop the player then go to the memory manager and stop the application completely -- but memory is not completely erased. As a result, I find myself having to do a soft reset every day in order to be able to do anything else on the Axim. Is anyone having the same problem? Some of you have mentioned using microsoft reader instead of Audible player to listen to books -- how do you activate microsoft reader to listen?

When you install install the Axim as a device on Audible, the necessary plugin should be installed for you on the Axim. Even if you haven't activated MS Reader (this is the general MS Reader activation), I believe you can still see the Audible books in your library list. When you select a book, it will load the plugin and play. You may not be able to see the book in the MS Reader library if it is open in the Audible Player (and vice-versa). You may need to put MS Reader into the background (close the active window) in order to get proper audio playback (Audible hasn't updated their plugin for the new MS Reader -- and this became necessary in 2002 for the new MS Reader version.)
Since you have PPC 2003, I won't be able to give you any tips until next week. That's when I should have my update CD. Audible indicated compatibility with 2003, but I don't believe that they have issued an update of their player for it. There didn't appear to be the same problem in 2002.

Volume on headphones
I use my Axin with Sync & Go to sync the Kenradio technology show to listen to on the train. Most of the time its good but sometimes I could do with more volume, when on the old rattler trains! Anyone know if you can buy headphones that have a small battery powered amp built into the cable?

Take a look at purchasing a set of noise cancelling headphones. I've seen inexpensive sets at discount stores such as Target, as well as the high-end sets available from vendors such as Bose. I own a set of the Bose and would not consider getting on an airplane without them. None of these are a good choice, however, if you listen to programs with lots of bass, since that tends to be the range that is cancelled out. . . .
