What are the practical differences between the Basic X5 and the Advanced? I see 400 vs 300 processor and 64mb vs 32mb of SDRAM. I don't play games but I could be using it for spreadsheets; word documents and email. For $100. more is it worth the advanced model or for my needs the Basic should work?

The speed difference isn't great (until X-Scale optimized apps arrive), but for the double memory (which can be used for running programs and storage) and the ultra-cool cradle... it was an easy choice for me to go with the Advanced model.

I agree with the recommendation for the 400 mhz model. The cradle is very cool, so even if I would have ordered the 300 model, I'd have wanted the cradle; that makes the difference only $80.
