just a British newbie saying "Hi!"

Just bought an Axim A5 refurbished on ebay and I'm loving it. I bought a little on impulse having become ticked off at the price I was expected to pay for a decent diary for work that I was going to have to replace every year anyway.
I'm delighted with the calendar function and actually enjoy inputting my appointments with the stylus on the touch screen. It just seems a very friendly device ( if that's not too anthropomorphic!) There's alot I'm not sure of though, like the infra red communication function. how useful is that? I was thinking I'd get maybe a wifi card and try to connect to my wireless router. I didn't think many devices used infra red to communicate apart from remote controls? can you actually browse any web pages with it, or just a few specific sites? Guess I'll find answers if I look. this site seems very good but I've not been here long.
Cheers

Welcome to the site! The X5 (assuming the A5 was a typo) is a great little device. IR is not used very much now for anything except for remotes, and you can get software that allows your device to function as a multimedia remote. When connected via wifi, you can definitely browse webpages with it, but with some limitations. Lots of people choose install third party browsers for a better browsing experience.

Welcome to the site:

Back its its day, the built in Pocket IE wasnt too bad of a browser. But in the last few years sites have become large and have a lot of flash.

A few things Id suggest:
-Get wm2003 on it, it comes with wm2002 by default, but maybe the previous owner upgraded it. Wm2003 runs more software than 2002.

I dont think anybody develops a browser for anything lower than wm5 nowadays, the best one out there in my opinion is Opera 8.65 the last version for wm2003. Its a few years old now and was payware although i dont know where you can get it now.

Hello, deskpilot. You'll find a few fellow United Kingdom citizens lurking about. We strive to be quite international here.

BTW, infrared can also be used for certain older mini keyboards. My first keyboard for my X51v worked via infrared communication, but bluetooth is quite superior in that no line of sight is required.

Welcome deskpilot!

Breley, those must some old keyboards! I thought IR was only used for transferring small files.

Congratulations on your first post, deskpilot

But before you're spending too many £ on expensive wifi and OS upgrades maybe you should consider to buy a X50 or even a X51v instead.
They're a very cheap nowadays so you'll get more bang for your money.

Don't get me wrong - the X5 is a nice toy but upgrading can be expensive.

Welcome to the MobilitySite - I'm sure you'll enjoy - :)

Agreed

I agree with the last post, be wary about spending too much on the X5 for Wifi etc when the X30h is probably very affodable with wifi built in.

As for Opera, 8.65 for 2003SE, it is still available from the Opera website (and is still payware) however, Opera Mini is also available which is free.
