I've read quite a few posts complaining about the quality of the voice recording on the Axim. Are these problems specific to the Axim or all PDAs and handhelds in general? Would Palm (e.g., Tungsten T) offer any advantages to PPC?
(Voice recording is important to me. I hope I won't have to settle for a dedicated audio unit like an mp3 player with voice recording instead!)
Well I had to do some field research the other day for a youth & society study and I took my axim on the playground of a pre-school and used Resco SPA (Speech Personal Assistant ) and I was able to record the kids conversations and stuff, when I downloaded the wav's back to my desktop, I had to turn the volume up high to hear it *clearly* but I could hear everything and was surprised it worked that well, so I say its a good recorder.

I haven't done any extensive testing, but I compared a voice recording side by side with a Compaq 3100 series, and it blew the Axim away. The only thing I didn't modify was the microphone gain; I had it set on full. Perhaps that caused some distortion.
One of the problems with X5's built-in note recording is the crackling. The problem is exacerbated by pressing the hardware side-record button (somehow the wiring is screwy and causes interference). To circumvent this problem, use the software 'record' button on the actual app.
Cheers.

Found a cool little program called NoteM that records audio into MP3s. Gives you a 5.5 recording ratio when compared to the recording in Notes. Also allows you to record over the 1 minute barrier (couldn't ever figure out how to enable that inside of Notes). I'm planning on using my Dell Axim now to record class lectures, etc, since with NoteM, I can record 3 hours worth of audio. Too cool!

Thanks.
I haven't really tried to use the side-button for anything longer than a short memo. Because:
1) the side-recording button is positioned at a real awkward place, and you have to give it a real hard push which hurts your finger after extensive periods
2) because of this, sometimes your finger gives a little and the recording stops without you knowing
3) crackling problem as noted
4) the soft-reset is positioned 2mm underneth, which can be pressed without using the stylus -- you see the problem
On a related note on buttons of the Ax - The d-pad is just horrendous if you try to do any navigation in excel or gaming. The jog dial seems real flimsy and way too sensitive, a little nudge would scroll pages -- where as using its 'action' feature is nearly impossible because you almost have to hammer it in to 'click' it.
Just my little gripes with the Ax... otherwise I'm really happy with this purchase.
Cheers.

On the Ax open Settings, Buttons, Up/Down Control and move the "Delay before first repeat" slider all the way to the right. You can also move other slider to the right to slow down the repeat rate if you want to.
That adjustment fixed my multiple page skipping in MSReader with both the d-pad and the jog dial.
A tip I tried today. I switched the button 4 (home) and the Record button on the side with each other. Now to record a voice recording, I just push the Previous Home button. Never used the button 4 much anyway. Don't think I get as much crackle with it on one of the front buttons. Sure is easier to push than the side button. Holding the Axim in my right hand, It is easy to press button 4 with my thumb especially while driving.
To change the assignments, just do Start, Settings, buttons, and highlight the button you want to switch and make a different choice.
