Worried Applications question?

Hi fellow Ax users, I am newbie who has been doing his homework on useful applications for my Xmas X5 advanced. I need it mostly for contacts, PIM, meeting reminders, and some ebooks, and mp3 use. The following are my choices of applications, but I am unsure if my list is sound:

1. Pocket Back-up Premuim @$29.95
2.Resco Explorer 2003 for Pocket Pc @ $19.95
3. Agenda Fusion @ $ 29.95
4. Wisebar Advanced @ FREE
5. Airscanner Mobile Antiviris Pro @ FREE
6. Adobe Acrobat Reader @ FREE
7. Shutdown @ FREE
8. Dava Image Viewer @ FREE
9. Pocket music @ FREE
10. WinamPAQ for MP3@ FREE
11. Total commander 1.1 to back up Resco Explorer @ FREE
12. Clauncher @ FREE
13. PocketBible Life Apps software @ $40 on EBay
14. Handy menu @ $2.99 for pc settings, soft reset, etc.
15. a FREE dictionary?

I will be running all on a San Disk Ultra II 60x 256MB SD card. What am I missing mature Ax users?

I think that I'd skip the antivirus app. There are certainly other choices that you can make for some of the apps - and I won't really get into them, 'cause I'm not sure that this is really the place - but your list looks pretty complete.

For a free dictionary, the MS Reader web site has ther Encarta dictionary free for download, and it gives the advantage of letting you look up a word while you are reading books in MS Reader, if you are thinking about MS Reader.

You might look at Icbar as a competitor to Wisbar. I have had both and prefer Icbar. Also, Pocket Informant is a parallel to Agenda Fusion. I think both are also priced similarly.

Instead of PocketMusic, I've been playing around with GSPlayer2 - jury is still out on which is easier to use playlists on and more readable. There is also PocketTV for watching mpegs. Both are free.

One other thing: you cannot run Agenda Fusion or Pocket Informant on an SD card, and I wouldn't run WisBar, cLauncher, HandyMenu or any other today plugin from a card, either, if they can be installed there at all. SD cards are slower than RAM and, if they are removed, it can lock the Axim.

As for anything else, if you use the calendar a lot you may want to look at the freeware plugin Calendar+, which gives you some more flexibility about the number of upcoming events and how they are displayed on the Today screen.

Big Smile

Jake and Mastman, thanks ole wise ones. Not having used IcBar I may have to give it a try. I am open for user feedback. Oh, I am an old Navy Pilot too! P-3s to be exact. Mastman, I will look at your MP3 suggestion. BTW, nice steelhead in the pic. I am a flyfishman too! I really love this site. Jake, Gigi, Iceman, and Raynne 412 are all great contributers. Thanks.

I think you did well, anglerbob333 :D. I also use Agenda Fusion and Wisbar Advance. I like the task management feature offered by Wisbar Advanced. tAgenda is another freebie app for the today's screen. You can find the link to download at the "Download" section.

I also use Pocket Backup Plus by Sprite Software. A proven life-saver.

You did very well to start with. The fun part of owning a PPC is to find out what else you can do with it. I have my Axim for over a year and I still can find new things to play with my Axim.

I would also recommend Repligo over Adobe Reader. It is not free but is an immensely useful document viewer. Adobe Reader is huge in size. Even though it can run in a Pocket PC environment, but it doesn't run well at all.

There are many discussion of must-have apps. Try these to start with:
Must-have apps thread 1
Must-have apps thread 2
Must-have apps thread 3

You could also look at Laridan for their Bible reader and assortment of Bible versions. I like Laridan a lot; I had it on my Palm and now on my Axim.

Drop, great threads to look at. Thread 2 had a great assortment of must have application ideas from other PDA users. I think any newbie will find thread 1 and 2 useful reads. Thanks.
