How to sync to Exchange Server 2003?

I have Exchange Server 2003 running on my Windows Server 2003 network at home. Exchange comes with ActiveSync installed and enabled, yet I can find very little information on how to set this up.

Presently, I have my Axim synchronizing to my desktop over wireless meaning that Outlook 2003 has to be always running. If I could sync to my server, I could not only not have to worry about Outlook on my desktop, but I could also syn over the Internet or by VPN.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I can't help you with sync'ing, but I really like the OMA client that we have setup for our Pocket PC's to access the Exch 2003 server. Works pretty slick and I like it better then sync'ing because I don't have to worry about firewalls.

I haven't even gone there yet, Fred. Does it work over wireless? Does it just act as a client for your Exchange mailbox or does it download to folders on the PDA?

It's like a web mail client for your PPC. You can initeract as if your were using Outlook. OMA stands for "Outlook Mobile Access". I can do mail, calendar, tasks, etc.....

only problem with OMA is you need a connection to the server web all the time using it. To sync try the following:-

open activesync on pda
go to tools -> options -> server
type in name of server (ip address may be better)
Select what you want to sync
go to options and set username password etc etc

may not be a complete guide but you seem like the kinda guy who will mess about with it until you get it working.

That is true... You do have to be connected to the Internet while using OMA. However, while at a conference a couple weeks ago it came in quite handy because the convention center was setup with wireless. I could use OMA to check my email and add things to my Outlook.

I admit sync'ing is handier, but it doesn't always work from the various locations I have been over the past couple years....

My calendar is important to me. It seems that with OMA, my calendar would only be available with an Internet connection which wouldn't be that great in my case.

Syncing with my server is good because I would not have to leave Outlook running on my desktop. Also, I should be able to sync with an Internet connection this way too.

I have a feeling tha the only way my Axim will connect to my server is through a VPN connection. I'll have to start playing around with this :-)
