I hope this is not a stupid question
OK, I am brand new to the pocket PC world and I am getting my Axim X3i on Thursday. My question is this. I want to get software into my Axim. Do I download the software in my laptop first and somehow tranfer it. How would I do that. I went to a site where they have free software for the Axim like Windows Media Player and what not. I doubt I will be going online with my AXIM anytime soon since I don't have high speed internet. Is there a way to download to my laptop and then transfer the files. Any help would be great, thanks.

You get apps onto your PPC "normally" via ActiveSync, the MS syncing software used for "talking" between PCs and PPCs.

It will come on the Software CD that comes with your device, or you can download it from the web,
google "activsync 3.7".

Most apps will come ZIPped, some will come as .EXEs and others will come as .CABs.

The first you will unzip on your PC to get one or the other of the other two.

An .EXE you will run on your PC, and if your are ASynced at the time, it will automatically begin the install process to your PPC.

.CABs on the other hand, you transfer bodily into a folder on your PPC and open there and it will install to your PPC.

You want to be looking forapps designed for XScale or ARM chips, NOT MIPs or SH3.

Make sure you keep at least, copies of any registration keys, especially for purchased software.

I would set up a Main Folder on your PPC for Axim Programs, with subfolders for each app you download, perhaps with sub-subfolders for ZIPped, unZIPped and Registration Files.

The more organized you are at the outset, the easier it will be in the future.

never hesitate to ask questions.........the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Also, use the Search Function here, it is very good, and if you learn how to manipulate it's features, yoy will be far ahead of the game.

And after a post is entered, at the "bottom-ish" of the page, will be the "Similar Threads Box", which has already done some relevance searching for you.

It does sound confusing at first, but hang in there......we were all there once. We're glad to help, so that eventually, you can help, too.

It really not that difficult. You connect your axim into the computer (either by cable, cradle, ir etc) then you run the installation program and it does it all for you, you just have to specify where the program goes.

On some occasions you need to copy a file directy to your axim, but it's just like moving anything else, you just use wondows explorer on your pc.

Best thing is first time you want to install something, check out the tutorials section of this site. I can't fault it and it certainly helped me.

Read Gigi's excellent tutorial on Installing, Running and uninstalling programs. It will help you a lot. It is on Aximsite>Learning Center>Tutorials.

ActiveSync 3.7.1 is more stable and reliable than 3.7. Get it from the Microsoft site.

As I stated in my earlier post, I have found ActiveSync 3.7.1 to be considerably more stable and reliable than any of the previous releases. I had seemingly endless problems with earlier versions but I have had none at all with 3.7.1. This seems like an advantage to me !

I am still running A00 and see no good reason to upgrade, particularly as I do not use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and very rarely use IR.

Happy Christmas to you and to all on Aximsite.
