DVD Rom
Like a lot of you, I'm waiting for my Axim. I want to start ripping DVD's, so I can take my daughter movies on the go, but I don't have a DVD Rom on my PC. Does the quality of the DVD Rom effect the out come of the DIVX file? How much money do you think It will cost for a DVD Rom?
The directions look complicated for ripping and compressing DVD's. How long will it take a newbie to get the hang of this?:D

Nope. Only thing it'll effect is how fast the files can be put onto your PC's harddrive.

I think it's about $50 for a 16X drive (that is a drive that can read DVDs at 16 times their normal play speed when ripping)

Just follow the guide step by step and you should be fine.
One thing to note is that the speed of your PC is really important to the time it takes to rip and reencode a DVD. If you have a PC with a processor slower than 1 GHz, you have to do the reencoding overnight. If you have an Athlon XP or Pentium 4 it won't take as much time.

Brooks,
I recently purchased a 16X DVD-Rom by LiteOn. I heard good things about their drives, and so far have not been disappointed. Fast and quiet.. all for about $50.

Brooks, I purchased the drive from a local retailer (Computer Builders Warehouse). However, you can use a site such as www.pricegrabber.com to compare the price of the drive from several retailers. Here is a link to newegg.com for the drive that I have. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=27-131-104
I've never ordered from newegg, so I can't recommend them, but it will at least provide you some info on the drive.

could a dvd movie fit on CF's? I seen 1G-3G of CF's but I definitely can not afford it yet. or do you have to convert it into smaller files? how do you do that? would that be possible? thanks in advance.

Look in the multi-media sections of this site, there's a lot of info. Avg full movie is under 200mb, so you don't even need such a big card. I'm looking to buy a 512mb CF. Still looking for a good price.

I don't know why people like there comps to be quiet, LOL, I have a mammoth of a computer, and I hear it upstairs lol. I love it, makes me feel powerful! Actually, that reminds me, I need to buy a 600 Watt power supply for it.
The reason its so loud is like 2 really powerful fans on it. I also have like 3 hard drives on it. so I need a lot of cooling, and at least my dvd burner is quiet..... I think its like running a hotrod. da louder, da better

I hada reason to post here, whoops. If you have a problem with ripping Dvd's there is an easy app called Dvdxcopy, and the site is dvdxcopy.com, I think it may help you get it off the dvd
