ram/rom/space

ok, I don't know much about computers, but I think that on a pc RAM is not space where you install programs. Is that right? Why do we install programs in ram on a pocket pc. Don't you install programs on a hard drive, or a floppy, or a cd. Aren't these different than RAM? There seems to be "Program" RAM and "Storage" RAM. Are they split up? Are they one and the same?

Somebody lecture me.

Desktop PC's have a RAM and a separate HDD (hard drive). Pocket PC's don't have a separate HDD. Think of the internal memory in the Pocket PC as a virtual HDD. When installing programs on a PPC it is stored to the virtual HDD being the internal memory.

On a desktop programs are installed and it goes to the HDD. When executed the executable is loaded into memory and then ran by the CPU. On a PPC there is a small portion of the RAM that is used as virtual memory (much like the memory on your desktop). The program is loaded to this virtual memory and then executed by the CPU.

We do not have to do this if 'we' buy storage cards in either CF (CompactFlash) or SD (Secure Digital) formats. They come in many sizes 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB and so on.

I just bought a SD card for my X5, I was wondering, when I install software to it, how do I select to install it to the SD Card? Thanks!

if/when the install asks if you would like to install to the default location, select "No" and you should then be allowed to select a new install location (like the SD card).

if the install never asks that it may be because of the way active sync is configured.

When installing the software via activesync, it will ask you if you want to install it to the default location. Click no. Then a dialog box will appear giving you the option of where to install it. Select the SD Card from the drop down box and click OK.
