I have an X5, and several Sandisk cards. 512 CF, 256 CF, 256 SD, and have had no problems. My X5 is a fairly new one, (new in September) running PPC 2003.

After much looking around and headaches I finally bought a 512MB SanDisk card today. Everywhere I looked were out of 512 MB cards or were really overpriced. Since the book I have "how to do everythiong with you Dell Axim" said that SanDisks were fine I decided to get one. Now it wasn't easy finding one since Best Buy had them on sale. Almost every store was sold out of them. On my way home from my sisters house I stopped off at the Best buy there and they had 1 left. I bought it and after my gift cards I used I paid $147 for it. Not bad considering I still have a 440 mail in rebate coming from it. The card actually does work and so far I have no problems with it. I just don't understand will its a 512 MB card and my Axm saying it has 483 MB. Anyway thanks.

The Axim reports it as 483 because it counts a KB as 1024 bytes and a MB as 1024KB (thus 1MB ~1.049 million bytes). Memory manufacturers count 1,000,000 bytes as a megabyte. 512/1.049=488. The other ~5 megs you are missing is lost in the formatting.

Um...the SD card problem was not restricted to just X5's. It was happening in PalmOS devices, cameras, iPAQs, etc. There are some issues with Dell chips, but there were also issues with SanDisk's card controllers. With that being said, I had one 128mb card replaced by SanDisk, but I later bought a 256, and, so far, it's been fine.

Finally I figured out how to make new folders on teh memory card and what not. It all gets pretty easy after awhile. Thatr's not saying that I didn't spend many many hours reading this site and that book first. I'm glad I now have an understanding of my Dell Axim. Hopefully now I can start to help answer questions for other newbies. The only thing I am still confused and having problems with it converting and loading DVD's files on my Axim. No biggie though.

to get DVD files on the the Axim you first have to rip the DVD and convert the resulting VOB files to a another format such as MPEGII (SVCD) that will make them more managable. (
from this point opinons differ but I use Window Movie maker which allows you to import the MPEG file and output it to a WMV file.
There are options to create a WMV file specifically for pocket PC use from within Window Movie Maker

A 5 min music vid rendered from a MPEGII source file will result in approx 6 or 7 mb file

I have not tried to import VOB direclty into Movie Make I had better have a look at that)
:rolling:

if you need more details perhape we could start a new thread

Maybe a new thread would be great. Just so the newbies have an idea of the different ways to convert and get dvd/movies files on their Axims. Maybe everyone can post their methods and links to teh software they use. I know in another forum here someone posted a thread with thier method but unfortrunatly, I can get the software they use. The website won't allow me. Just to make things easier I think a new thread would be a great idea.
