Help! I've got an Axim X5 and NO experience!
I got it for xmas, and was totally surprised. I didn't ask for one. Well, since I have it, I'd like to use it. The main things I would want to do are:
- Surf the web;
- E-mail;
- Read e-books;
- Write (something compatible with MS Word).
Keep in mind that I'm as new to this as it's possible for a person to be. How can I do the things I want to do?
Thanks!

The things that you can do right off the bat is read e-books, and create word documents.
To create a word document, just click "new" on the bottom left side of your today screen. A menu will pop up allowing you to choose what type of file you wish to create, then just click on it and type, or write away.
To read e-books you first must send them to your device using activesync, or by placing them on a memory card (your manual should guide you through the activesync installation and use process). Once the e-book is on your axim, use "microsoft reader" in your programs folder (located by clicking the "start" on the upper left hand side of your today screen, then click the "programs" to get to the menu).
As far as getting email and surfing the web, this depends on your type of internet, and if it is dial up, then also your isp.
Hope I didn't insult your intelligence with the steps, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

There's a few things that demented left out. One you'll have to get your Microsoft Reader Activated. Activation is rather simple just follow the link that your Axim provides on your computer and follow the instructions at the web site for activation. By the way, you should have your Axim in the cradle at all times. After you goto the link - close Microsoft Reader. There's a bug with MSReader when activating while open on the Axim. It won't activate. You can goto this site for some real good classic ebooks.
www.pocketrocketfx.com
They have some real good classics that are free and good to start off with. The Pocket Word that is on your Axim is 100% compatible with Word on your PC. But Word on your PC is not 100% compatible with the Pocket version. There's some things Word can do that Pocket Word can't but the normal stuff like bolding, centering, just overall formatting and stuff is flawless.
ENJOY!

You can surf the web and use email whiile the Ax is in the cradle. Just make sure the pass-through option is set in ActiveSync.
But you'll want to wander around and surf the web from different rooms or in Internet cafés or on the street, so sooner or later you'll want to buy a WiFi Compact Flash card that plugs into the top of the Ax. You can use this at WiFi access points in cafés, libraries, and so on.
Later you'll probably want to buy a Wireless router, access point, or PCI (or USB) card for your home computer system so you can surf in the garden (bath, bed, etc.).
You might like to check out the Wireless forum (esp. the tutorial and FAQ), and eBay, Google, etc., for prices.
[Writing this on my X5 in bed @ 3:56 am UK time and sending Via my Linksys WCF12 WiFi compact flash card and Netgear MA311 wireless PCI card. Ain't technology wonderful?]

Hi
I am intending to use my Axim via the Smbol WiFi CF card to access the internet through my laptop which has a dial up connection. You say that it depends on your ISP, why is this are some not compatible? is so how can i tell. I would tell you my ISP but i'm from the UK so it probably wouldn't be much help
Thanks
Big A :)

Welcome to Aximsite :) And, sometimes the best gifts are the ones you don't ask for!!
This site has A TON of great information for you. One of the best places to start learning is to go through the X5 forum and check out some of the topics posted there. Also, using the Quick Search (top of the page) is another great feature on this site and, most times, you will find your questions already have answers. But, by all means, if you're still confused, find the forum that best suits your question(s) and ask away :)
Also, another good source for information (especially for newbies) is this book:
http://shop.osborne.com/cgi-bin/osbo...html?q=pwax123
good luck...and again, welcome to the site!!

Your ISP shoiuldn't matter if you plan on using WiFi. I think dementedlemur was referring to using a dial-up modem on the Axim. Some ISPs require special software that is not available for PPCs.
For WiFi on the Axim with a dial-up ISP, you'll need a second WiFi device (probably just a PC adapter for the laptop) and then you'll need to set them up in ad-hoc mode and enable internet connection sharing on the laptop. It can sometimes be a little tricky to get working but people have done it successfully.
You might want to check out the WiFi How-to linked in my signature (but be forewarned, it's mostly written for use with a WiFi network on a broadband connection but there are a few details in the alternate setups that may be of use to you).

You will find 25 e-books on your Axim CD.
Pocket Word is a very much cut down version of MS Word 2000 or XP. Depending on what sort of writing you want to do it may well be pefectly adequate. But for more serious writing try using TextMaker from www.softmaker.com

Open the active sync on your desktop. Click on the options icon then on the rules tab. It is at the bottom of that tab.
