Pressing just the X button, might be not enough. I have the habit that everytime I finish working with the axim I'll click start->settings->sytems->memory->running programs, and then stop everything that still running.
But also you could just add the switcher bar (you find on the same menu of settings)that allow you to stop any program that still running, that way you can keep monitoring before you shut down, what program that still "alive". It's a good ideia to close all programs before you shut down, that way you save the battery power.
I hope that help you.

Also, yes the power button does the shut down on the axim. What happen when you see the program back it's that it was yet full close. There's some software like Icbar that allow you to shut down the axim on the screen, like a desktop. Check it out.

One thing that bugged me when I first got my X5 was that I would often turn it on in the dark, and the backlight would not come on..I'd then have to bumble around looking for a light so I could see the screen and turn the backlight up.
Some handy hints to avoid the same frustration:
When the axim is ON:
A quick click on the power button will turn the axim off.
Click and hold the power button to simply power down the backlight (I'm not sure why you would ever want to do this, but hey, it's a feature!)
When the axim is OFF:
A quick click on the power button will turn the axim on, but with the backlight OFF
Press and hold the power button to turn the axim on with the backlight ON
There also seem to be various combinations of the above that will mess up your backlight settings, I just wish the backlight would stay where I set it, regardless of how I push the power button.
As for the X, the X by default only minimises the applications. To close them, follow the procedure above, or install something like Omega One's Program Bar (Which comes with Battery Bar or Journal Bar) which has some extra settings to alter the way the X behaves.

it helped a little, i kind of understand how to shut down and stuff. Thanks. But what I don't understand is that after i opened solitaire and closed it by pressing the X, it's icon is still in the start menu, like it is minimized. I tried going to memory--> running programs but it doesn't show it, so i dunno.. thanks though!

It just show the last actions that you performed, it does not mean that still running. Think in a way to just make easy for you to access quickly a certain program. Also a good way to "create" more memory it's doing a soft reset.

Scratch2k,
Go to Start > Settings > System Tab > Brightness > Then at the bottom of the screen UNCHECK "dim/light display using power button"
That will disable the power button brightness thing! :)

the soft reset button is located on the left side of the axim(as the screen facing you). there's the scrolling button and two more buttons: one it's for voice recording and the one bellow, smaller one, it's the soft reset. you can perform using your stylus.

First, when you turn off your Axim it is not shutting down like a desktop computer does. It merely goes into a suspended state. Battery power is still being used to retain the state of all the applications running on your Axim.
Secondly, Microsoft's standard for Pocket PC applications is to not support a close button. The "x" button on compliant applications minimizes the application. This is because your Axim is in an "Always On" state--meaning you do not have to boot up the Axim. When available memory goes below a certain threshhold, the operating system begins notifying running applications to shut itself down.
