Arrow looking up directions?

hey, i ordered an Axim that should come by the end of this month, and iw as wondering.. do the map programs that come with it or that you buy work for just telling you directions to places? (without the GPS) not necessarily telling you exactly when to turn and such, but to provide mapquest.com type directions? then if there was such a thing as a handy-dandy yellowpages program, you could easily just find directions on the road whenever you need to get somewhere?

just thought id ask. it would be a great feature for me. especially since i have a mom who wants me to constantly drag around a map book cause shes so afraid im going to get lost.

Depending on where you live, MS' site has some maps for major cities. You'll need PocketStreets tho.

Cheers.

Mapopolis is what you are looking for. It supports GPS cards on the Axim and has driving directions included.

The software is free and you pay for the maps. IMHO, the maps and software are of a much, much higher quality than the maps from Pocket Streets 2003. This might be because of my Canadian location but Pocket streets divided my city along borough lines in indivdual maps. The maps didn't match up to the neighbouring ones.

Mapopolis gives one large map that scrolls really cool and has a lot of businesses and points of interest.

Check it out:

According to Mapolis, the platinum maps they offer are the ones used by mapquest.

This is an excerpt from the Mapolis FAQ:
What are the differences among map types?
There are principally 3 different types of maps that we offer to the user. They are the basic, enhanced, and platinum maps. Mapopolis maps collectively cover the United States. Each county map file contains information for one county or county equivalent. The map data source for the basic and enhanced maps is the US Census Bureau's TIGER '00 database. The map data source for the platinum maps is licensed from Navigation Technologies, which also provides map data for MapQuest.

Funny thing about Mapquest is that their online maps are way out of date compared to Mapopolis'. I guess they don't update the Canadian maps as often

Yeah the free Canuck maps provided by MS' site is really limited. For Toronto, its only good if you're living downtown or something. On the otherhand, if you got a copy of MapPoint or Street&Trips exporting any region of maps is pretty cool. I don't use GPS, so I can't comment on MS' PS' GPS features -- but the 3meg slice of GTA map I cropped out from MapPoint is definately cool. The feature I like about PocketStreet is that when you click on a contact, you can tell it to find it on the map automatically.

Cheers.
