Remote access of another pc

Hi everyone,

I'm getting a X3i and was wondering if the following setup would be possible:

I am building a media server to store mp3's, dvd's etc and it will be running windows xp. It will be connected to my home network which has a 54g router in it.

Will there be anyway in which I can control the media server via the X3i, and tell the server to play a particular mp3 or dvd?

I don't want to steam the media across the network and then get the X3i to actually play it, I just want to be able to control the media server.

tia

If it is running XP, you can use the terminal services client on the X3i to control the PC via Remote Desktop. Right click on My Computer and go to Properties. On the Remote tab, make sure that "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" under Remote Desktop.

I believe that feature is only available in XP Pro. Another downside is, it will log you out on the actual PC if you choose an active user name (supposedly will be fixed in SP2). In either case, an alternate approach is pocketVNC (download the server version for the PC you want to control (doesn't have to be XP). Both pocketVNC and the VNC Server are free, a quick google search ought to find it.

It will only log you out if you choose log out from the terminal services client. If you choose disconnect, it will lock the local workstation when you are done.

You are right, remote desktop is only in XP Pro.

brobinson & SDNick484 thanks for the replies.

I'll be using XP pro, thinking about using Win 2K3 as well so I'll see if the remote desktop stuff is in there.

I'll have a look at pocketVNC as well and have a play with that.

Thanks again.

If you mean Windows Server 2003 by Win 2K3 it is called Terminal Services and not Remote Desktop.

I am interested in remote controlling my laptop. Any advise on settings? - I downloaded VNC and PocketVNC but my first attempts to get them to talk together over a wireless link didn't work.

I realized something important I forgot to add. Using an Axim on a 802.11G network will lower your network performance to 802.11B speeds. This is still enough bandwith for streaming some audio, but your overall performace will go way down. I'll elaborate more on this after my engineering class ens.
