Ordering an Axim from Dell: Over the phone vs. On the web

Just out of curiousity, do people get a better 'deal' if they phone up Dell (or have Dell phone them) and speak with a sales rep?

Any tips on how to go about doing that?

I'm looking specifically for UK users' opinions, but US users can feel free to also reply.

Cheers

I always prefered talking to a person. If you see an internet deal, you could mention it and they can give you the same deal. Worked for me. Got $50 knocked off the final price.

Don't know about phone deals.

However my Axim 3i arrived today (6 days to deliver from a saturday PM order, I guess it's not all that bad - hmmm for s atock item ..... ).

It's still on charge (1h to go ;-))

Who was more surprised than me when the 'free 2nd battery' with the X3i turned out to be an >> 1880ma/h << battery (ie, a big fat juicy one) rather than the standard 2nd battery I expected!

Will prove useful for the wifi feature which is likely to suck juice.

I also found a basic case with belt-clip in the package, which was nice-to-have and will prolly keep me going for a few months.

So maybe ensure that you get as many extras as possible I guess. One thing which might have been nice but didn't come in the box, I got a mains charger and cable, but afaik the sync cable plug wouldn't have cost more than a few pence more on top, maybe they could have dropped that in the box instead of the standard charging cable.

Other than that it's looking good. One quibble I have which was a real pain is about delivery :

They don't allow you to specifiy a mobile number to contact, it has to be a landline. Then, it turns out the delivery company (Wlahs Western - ever heard of em ?!?) phone you -- when you're at work, obviously ! -- to arrange delivery, turn up and try to leave the package.

While the tracking worked ok to a degree, the people who were in charge of drop off (BusinessLink) cannot deliver to anywhere *but* the registered card address if you order by credit card.

So - here's my techie pals top tip - if you order by card, register your credit card at your home address and *as well* add your work address to the card - most CC companies will do this.

So, when you phone up and they say 'we're delivering to your house even if you're out', you can order instead using your work address and get it in business hours rather than wasting a day waiting for delivery (or miss it like I did).

As it turns out, I drove to the local delivery depot tonight to pick up my missed delivery, ^then^ they pointed out that the scribbled '89' next to the signature actually meant they'd dropped it off next door , at house number 89, rather than any sort of package tracking ID which I assumed it was - dumb old me !

Anyway be up & running shortly <glow>!

Good luck with the negotiations.

you'll probably get your order processed faster if you order via phone

YEAH!!!.....BUD!!!!!

And not just with Dell.......WAY too many places just put up a WWW Order Page, and then just ignore it!

I've placed orders with a lot of "Online" Order Pages, only to wait & wait & wait for my order to be processed, much less be debited from my Debit Card or my Credit Card.

I may even get a "confirmation" number, but still it doesn't show in my Statement......for Weeks.........if EVER!!!

But, give 'em a call and lo-and-behold.........(OHMG!!!)........there it is!!!

Of course, by that time, I'm so fed up with their "WWW-IN-expertise, that I just tell 'em to CANCEL the *#&^#$*@-ing thing!

Here's another interesting question:

Does ordering from 'Small Business' rather than 'Home' make any difference to the level of customer service?
