You can get more than 9...but it stops responding properly...I have had applications force more than 9 into the start menu and cause problems

But there are applications which let you have a collapsible start menu (more like on a regular pc)...but I've not tried this...

I use handy launcher (which gives you a customisable drop down menu) & rhinolaunch (which adds icons to your today screen)

i dont think so, i dont like the way ms limists you to these mundane details either, but you can easily customize your today screen to have shortcut button. I forget what the program name is, but i am pretty sure it is in the download section of aximsite, and i know it is free

if you want to really customize your today screen, i would reacommend ppx-all-in-one

using this software, you can pretty much costomize your today screen to anything you want it.

look at the pics from this thread for more info on ppx

I run more than 9 in my menu at times with no ill effect. here is the gimmic. open you file explorer and go to windows>start menu>programs...here you will find all the shortcutas to your programs at this point you can cut and paste or copy them here...>windows>start menu....you may have noticed some icons there before. These are the ones set the by the settings>menu option. If you cut and paste you will only be able to get to the program buy hitting start. if you copy it over to start menu then programs like OmegaOne's Program bar will see duplicate instances of the program. (not bad but can be confusing the first time. Happy hunting!

If you want to stick to the traditional 9, you can some be folders that take you directly to the contents of the folder. For example, I have a Games folder on my menu and clicking on that takes me to all the games and I just launch from there.

As gizmox5 says, you can cut and paste or copy as many shortcuts as you like into Start Menu. If there are more than 9, then the Start menu background changes to white and a scroll bar appears to allow access.
