I'm looking at getting the x3i but I've just seen the HP 4150, which is nice too. My main use for the PPC will be MP3's, Ebooks, movies and contact management. As I travel a lot I wanted some type of on flight entertainment and I didn't want a dozen gadgets.
Q1. Why take the HP over the Dell? I see I can get a few extras for the x3i because of the cost saving and I know the HP has Bluetooth. Bluetooth isn't of value to me, but you never know.
Q2. Does ActiveSync work with Lotus Notes? I'm using Notes at work and would like to take all my contacts (address book) and put it on the x3i. I just need a one off sync because I'm leaving this company so wont need Notes functionality again (I hope).
Q3. Syncing over wireless - Can I sync at home over wireless with Outlook running on my desktop computer?
Q4. Is syncing just as easy of IRDA and does it have the same functionality?
Q1. It's up to you, I personally have a HP iPaq 2210 and I love it. I too have no use for bluetooth although you never know. I can tell you that the next cell phone upgrade that I make will most certainly have bluetooth
Q2. Not sure
Q3. Yes, I sync wirelessly to me VAIO notebook several time a week, sometimes several times a day. Mainly I sync my new Quicken activities, although you can select what you what to sync including your contacts without OUTLOOK running.
I mean in Q4 does syncing work over infra-red okay? It seems to be the forgotten transport but its on most Laptop's (I use a Dell Laptop). Because of that it doesn’t rate much of a mention on review sites.
Syncing does work via infrared. It has all the same functionality of regular cable syncing. The only thing is that it is a bit slower than USB syncing.
There are third party apps to allow syncing with Lotus Notes. But since you only need this function for a short period of time, I would suggest importing Lotus Notes data into Outlook. Save you the cost of the app and you could make all the necessary adjustment in a desktop before syncing to your Axim.
Yes, you can sync wirelessly. There is a very detailed step-by-step instruction here at aximsite.com. Search for it, could save your a lot of headache.
I can't figure out what all of the inside jokes are about bluetooth and activesync on this site, so I figured I'd ask again. I have a new Inspiron 600m, an Axim X5 ith Pocket Pc 2003, and a Bluetooth Truemobile 300 which I just received from Dell.
I'm exhausted trying to figure out what's wrong. The guys in India tried to help me Active Sync my Axim with my laptop, and when I called the wireless guys in the U.S. they said they had never heard of anyone trying to Activesync with the a bluetooth card.
Am I an idiot? What on earth is a bluetooth card for if I can't use it to ACtiveSync?
The main problem is that my PDA only will let me use COM6 or higher to sync, and my Bluetooth Manager on my laptop will only let me use COM 4.
Thanks the fast reply, Roscoe. I really appreciate it.
unfortunately, he software that came with my bluetooth card does not have a bluetooth manager on it - do you know of another bluetooth manager that doesn't cause my Axim X5 to freeze? There's no option on the Axim to Activesync to my laptop using bluetooth. Any suggeston?
I had an Axim X5 and was looking at the X3i or 4150 as an upgrade. Although the 4150 was more expensive it is smaller, IMHO nicer looking, has both BT and Wifi and there appear to be problems with the Wifi on the X3i with certain ROM versions.
In addition Dell Canada are clowns.
Close call between the two - I went with the HP and am very happy with it.
