Yes and no. You can purchase a CF adapter for a sim card, etc., but battery life won't be great as Axims are not designed to be standby devices.

Old X51 but new questions.

Sorry if this info has already been answered.

I just took over my wifes X51 that she was using just for GPS, Navteq does not support the software anymore so i got her a Tom Tom an dI took the X51.

Can I use it for my personal Emal via dialup or Broadband? What would I need? I guess I am curious if they make a broadband card or wireless modem that would fit into the CF or SD slot.

I also wanted to make sure it is updated, so i checked Dell's site and saw some updates, but as usual they don't tell you how to apply them to the Axim. I can download to my PC, but need to know how to take it from there.

Thanks in advance

You can get a CF modem or CF ethernet card. Note that these are wired. If you're looking for wireless, you should just use wifi. If your X51 doesn't support wifi, you can get a CF wifi card. Just make sure it is compatible with WM5.

All updates are done via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Centre (if you're running Vista). Downloads are available from Microsoft for free. Connect your device to your PC using AS or WMDC, and execute the update file.

Worried

I have just bought an Axim x51 [the basic model, running WM5].

Just to confirm my understanding of the forum postings:

1. It is possible to have 2 cards installed at the same time [CF and SD].
2. It is possible to install a CF 802.11g WiFi adapter card.
3. It is also possible to install an SD 802.11g WiFi adapter card.
4. There is no limit on the size of CF flash card which can be installed.
5. There is a notional limit of 4GB on the size of SD card which may be installed.
6. Probably the best combination of cards would therefore be SD Wifi and CF memory card,
allowing the greatest memory possible.
7. The note in the manual saying that the low X51 cannot accept SD wifi cards is now in error, having been superseded by subsequent technological developments [drivers, etc].

Boys, as a humble non-technology type, have I got it right?????

Welcome to the club!

1. Yes
2. Yes, but make sure it comes with the correct drivers
3. Yes, but make sure it comes with the correct drivers
4. I am not sure; I am not up on the latest reports
5. Depends...you should be able to hack it to read SDHC
6. Depends on 4 & 5
7. That should be correct.

Since I did not answer your specific questions about CF and SD, try searching the forums or posting a thread about these issues. I am still running WM2003SE on my X50v so don't want to lead you down the wrong path. :)

Hello to all, I'm a totaly new PDA user. I got Dell Axim x51v from ebay about week ago. I had a lot of problems with it. When arived i found out that touch screen is not working. Then the guy sent me a new one, i changed it. Now its working but I have to tap really hard or it will not be accurate at all. It's accurate only when i press it hard, I am scared that i can hurth the screen behind touchscreen. I think that touch screen is low quality, i think is to hard and thick it should be softer. That is my rational thinking, because I dont have any other explenation. So far I'm really disappointed. I've seen that many people enjoy this PDA and I really want to explore and try.
If someone can give me advice about touch screen if someone had same problems?

I would like to put some information of my axim:

Model Dell Axim x51v
processor Type Intel PXA270
processor speed 624MHz
RAM Size 64MB
ROM Size 256 MB
ROM version A01 (08250500)

Microsoft windows mobile version 5.0 OS 5.1.1702 (Build 14366.1.0.1)

I give this information because I think that I should do some upgrade but I'm not sure witch one. So if anyone have time to explain me what should I upgrade. I've seen some axims that works a bit faster then mine. I assigned procesor speed 624, it's better but not fast as their. Does it depends on some cards, on some free memory? or if I upgrade will it change?

There is a lot of question I know, but whenever someone have some time
Thank you all in advance

You have the highest version of the X51 series. Despite its age, it should still be pretty speedy. Have you tried a hard reset to start completely fresh? You can also upgrade the OS to WM6.1:

Experimental/Beta WM6.1 ROMs for Axim X51v

There is also a 6.5 available but that is still in testing.

Note that the risks involved include completely bricking your device.

Regarding the touchscreen issue, have you tried re-aligning your screen? And if there's a screen protector installed, try removing it.

Gigi, actually there is another update misliliac can do.

Dell released their A12 (Or A02, using their number system. They are the same thing) update. Sync your Axim and backup all personal files (I doubt there is any). You have to use Activesync (For Windows XP), not Windows Mobile Device Center (For Windows Vista). So this update can only be done on an XP computer.

Download this file. If the update does not auto-start, go to C:\Dell\R129272\Aximupdate.exe. Then follow all the instructions given by the updater.

And yes, as Gigi mentioned, there is WM6.1 upgrades that are done by 3rd party developers. I am running them on both my x51v and x50v. To be frank, they are a lot faster than WM5. Of course, there is a risk of bricking, but of all my 10+ times bricking my device, none have ever been permanent. If you choose to upgrade to WM6.1, I will gladly assist you in the process.

LennySh (A ROM developer) will release his WM6.5 ROM very very soon, I hope. The screenshot looks absolutely phenomenal. Of course, that will be an early alpha, not suitable for regular usage. But still, drooling to install it.

Two things with the touchscreen.

It may be the cheap version, they tend to be less sensitive.
You could invest in a better one if that is the case.

Another possibility is that you didn't remove the protective cover when you installed it.
Some have a thin plastic sheet over them for shipping, if it was a tight fit you may have had one and left it on.

You mean a business card, a credit card is too hard and thick to clean the edges properly.

But, as mislilac has changed the screen, there shouldn't be any junk in that area.

Thank you all guys.

I tried to take of touchscreen again and did everything to put it right, but its still less sensitive. Yes, it must be a cheap version, I will try to find a better one.

Regarding the upgrade, I will really like to upgrade to WM6. And I will need your help johnhu_2005 to do that. I have only one computer its running Win7 so I can't update A12, not sure what that is but It is good to be updated:). Can you tel me where to download WM6 and some tips on how to install it?

Thank you

Just to be clear, when you say "touchscreen" do you mean the physical screen that you have to open the Axim to change, or do you mean a thin plastic protective film that you place on the screen to stop it getting scratched?

If it is the protective layer it is called a screen protector.
They come in a wide variety of types, some good some very bad, and if they aren't applied correctly will not work well at all.

johnhu_2005,

I spent some time on forum reading about that developer. Should I maybe wait for him to finish it and instal WM6.5 or should I try to install WM6.1? And when you say brick, does it mean that it can be permanently damaged? If i fallow all the steps is there also a chance to mess up something:)). I know that windows is not so stable but I'm not really familiar with WM:)
